In regards to my visit to Washington & Lee University for the debate between Maggie Gallagher and Andrew Sullivan, I'm still digesting. It was great to get together with Dennis though, we really never see each other, and we're not even sure that snicks is a real person or just a 1980s model computer. As far as the debate, held in the Lee Chapel over the crypt, Maggie didn't really seem on her best game and was all over the place with an admittedly polite but hostile audience. Sullivan made a wonderfully personal case for marriage equality being the conservative ideal for finding a way to bring a new disruption into the constructs of a society without destabilizing it.

But Dennis and I spent about a half hour talking to Maggie at the reception, just us. She's articulate, and there really isn't anything "mean" about her positions. I don't agree with »

5 April 2012 5:45 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Reality TV stars have been slowly inching their way into politics — witness the Real World's Sean Duffy, now a congressman from Wisconsin, or mull over the gubernatorial ambitions of Rupert Boneham from Survivor — but it's time to reclaim our elected offices for the people who really deserve them: actors! NBC Saturday night sitcom veteran Park Overall, who played sassy Southern nurse Laverne on the 1988-1995 show Empty Nest, is running for senator in Tennessee, where she hopes to represent the Democratic party against Republican incumbent Bob Corker. "Somebody had to do it and if nobody else will do it, I will do it," Overall said, explaining that she was galvanized by the conservative war on contraception. "I’m a good Democrat and there doesn’t seem to be one around. I’m going for broke." Good luck, Park! And if Jackee and the deacon from Amen want to get involved, »

I Link You Just the Way You Are

Just a heads up. I was pleased that people passed this around twitter after I posted it but Do Not Read The New Yorker review of A Separation before seeing the film. I recently named the movie Best of the Year but one of the greatest things about it, that I was careful not to spoil in my review or any of my subsequent writeups or awards postings is how it keeps defying expectations and throwing more and more complications your way. That New Yorker review, which is meant to be an enticement to see it and is otherwise beautifully written, will significantly damage your viewing pleasure as it gives away several twists and nearly the entire plot. You're welcome. And for shame Anthony Lane! Why do that to readers and potential ticket buyers?

Kristy McNichol comes out

Raise your hand if you could never hear the dialog in Little Darlings because your gaydar was pinging so loudly when Kristy McNichol was onscreen.

Little Darlings

I see those hands. And today, your gaydar has been proven right. In this week's People McNichol acknowledged that she is indeed a lesbian. The actress also released a picture with her partner of more than 20 years, Martie Allen.

If you didn't raise your hand, you're probably a decade younger than those of us high-fiving because we knew it all along. McNichol was one of our favorite mulleted icons on '80s TV, appearing in everything from Family (in which she played Buddy, the younger sister of Meredith Baxter's character) to one of the kids on Empty Nest.

Along the way, she appeared in movies like Little Darlings and Two Moon Junction, which I watched over and over without ever quite knowing why. »
