Adele's Success Made Amy Winehouse Feel 'Competitive And Restless'

16 May 2012 7:53 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Adele's history-making success has reinvigorated the music industry in the best way possible. Sales of her acclaimed 21 helped the industry to its first year-over-year sales increase since 2004 and she's continued her chart dominance throughout 2012. The reception the acclaimed album has received is proof that people are still very much interested in powerful vocalists who are also the driving creative force behind their own music.

The last time we can remember an album receiving this kind of enormous and universal reception from both critics and music lovers was Amy Winehouse's modern classic Back to Black in 2006. It seems the late singer was as aware of that fact as anyone else … and it made her quite nervous.

At least according to Mark Ronson, a long-time Winehouse confidant and the producer behind Back to Black. In a new interview with the Village Voice, Ronson reveals that Adele's success made Winehouse feel "upset, »

Greta Gerwig Gets Her Sandra Bullock Moment In 'Lola Versus'

26 April 2012 10:49 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

"Lola Versus" is not your traditional romantic comedy. In fact, according to star Greta Gerwig, it's not a romantic comedy at all.

"You know post-apocalyptic movies?" Gerwig asked HuffPost Entertainment. "This is a post rom-com. It's after the romance. It does start at the end of it."

She's not kidding: before the opening credits of "Lola Versus" (out in theaters on June 8 via Fox Searchlight) are over, Gerwig's Lola has celebrated her 29th birthday, gotten engaged to her long-time boyfriend (Joel Kinnaman) and been dumped just before her wedding day. The film -- written by Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister Jones ("Breaking Upwards") and directed by Wein -- charts the next year of Lola's life, and how she picks up the pieces in the shadow of her fast-approaching 30th birthday.

The charming indie dramedy, which co-stars Lister Jones as Gerwig's onscreen Bff, had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this week. »

Gossip – Perfect World: Music Video Review

19 April 2012 2:36 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Gossip does Total Eclipse of the Heart in sepia for their big return single, Perfect World. Now I love a good visual reference when it comes to music videos but sweet Jesus, Mary and the donkey she rode (let’s call him Derek) this one has influences flying out of all crevices like disturbed bats in the belfry but more on them later.

First of all I’d like to take a moment to look back at the Gossip-minus-the-The’s previous marriages of audio and visual: remember when a little song called Standing in the Way of Control appeared in the Skins (before it went downhill) Ad campaign and all the now-Hipsters thought ‘Oh yeah! They’re so edgy vomming up everywhere, let’s go be hipster too!’ and became hipster and everyone loved The Gossip because they were told it was cool? »

The Flaming Lips Release Very Nsfw Video For Collaborative Album

17 April 2012 9:37 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

By Zachary Swickey

The Flaming Lips had a wild year in 2011 – more wild than usual, that is – releasing new music (often collaborations) every month, concocting a gummy skull with Usb drive brain, and rocking out in California’s historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery for a pair of special performances. And now, the group has packaged some of their collabs into a new album: The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.

Heady Fwends finds the Flaming Lips hooking up with a diverse group of artists, including Ke$ha, Biz Markie, Chris Martin and Bon Iver, but their new video with electro act New Fumes, “Girl, You're So Weird,” is all anyone is talking about.

The highly Nsfw video, which you can see here, features smoke bombs erupting various colors and a bevy of naked ladies roaming around a dark room lit only by colored lights and a shiny disco ball. You can even »

This Sunday, Discovery premieres what could be the most fascinating hour of its seven-part polar exploration series Frozen Planet — the making-of. We already talked with series producer Vanessa Berlowitz and director Chadden Hunter about how this installment is for them — especially in the case of revisiting the solo bison-wolf battle captured in last week’s “Winter” episode – a therapy session. (“We wanted to basically take the viewer’s hand and say, ‘Okay, this was emotional to watch, but we go through the same emotions when we film it,’” Hunter said.) Interview: Flaming Lips frontman talks 'Heady Fwends,' recording for Ke$ha

30 March 2012 12:30 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The Flaming Lips tapped into some seriously weird talent for their forthcoming collaborative album “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends” -- weird, not just in type, but the breadth. The Oklahoma-based rock band put their heads together with noise rockers Lightning Bolt for something called “ I'm Working At Nasa On Acid,” but then flipped a cover of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” with Erykah Badu. Other big names like Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Yoko Ono and Nick Cave grace the track list of “Fwends,” but it was Ke$ha that surprised Lips frontman Wayne »

All The Songs From The '21 Jump Street' Soundtrack Including Eminem, The Clash, N.W.A., Foster The People & More

13 March 2012 8:59 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Bigger and badder than anything Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum have done before, "21 Jump Street" is the kind of action comedy that is getting labels like "instant classic" thrown around (okay, maybe we said that). And while the movie has been marketed hard, one thing you won't be getting (oddly enough) is an official soundtrack or score (which is a pity because Mark Mothersbaugh of Wes Anderson-film fame composed the score), but not to worry because we got you covered there.

Below you'll see the list of every song featured in "21 Jump Street." It's a pretty diverse mix of stuff ranging from the classics (The Clash, N.W.A.) to the up-and-comers (Foster The People, Rye Rye), and we've included samples of the songs referenced in the movie including Pete Seeger's take on "Fifteen Miles On The Erie Canal Song" and Mary Martin's rendition of "I've Gotta Crow." Badly Drawn Boy's 'Being Flynn' Soundtrack Is a Smooth Move

28 February 2012 7:00 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The last time filmmaker Paul Weitz and indie-folk musician Damon Gough (a.k.a. Badly Drawn Boy) teamed up, it was on 2002's adaptation of Nick Hornby's "About a Boy." Ten years on, it's still considered by many of Gough's fans to be some of his finest work.

Now, the dynamic duo of movies about guys with parenthood issues is reuniting for another literary adaptation, "Being Flynn," Weitz's take on author Nick Flynn's memoir "Another Bulls**t Night in Suck City." Can jangly, emotionally compelling lightning strike twice?

The answer is yes, but only to a limited degree. To be certain, Badly Drawn Boy can turn out a heartfelt ballad. The opener, "I'll Keep the Things You Throw Away," is Beatles-esque, and its plaintive violins make for excellent romantic-playlist material. "The Smile Behind Your Face" has a certain funk to it, propelled as it is by a prominent »

Glee Season 3 Episode 10 Review: Big News & Bigger Stars Return for ‘Yes/No’

19 January 2012 7:53 AM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

With a long winter break, Glee returned with some big news and some bigger guest stars. Coach Bieste (Dot-Marie Jones) is married, Mr. Shu (Matthew Morrison) proposed to Emma (Jayma Mays) and Finn (Cory Monteith) had a big surprise up his sleeve. The start of the second half of season three had its ups and downs but it wasn’t lacking in romance.

The episode began with Grease’s “Summer Lovin’” as performed by Mercedes (Amber Riley), Sam (Chord Overstreet) and crew. Grease can be as predictable as you can get but at least the producers went with Mercedes and Sam as the leads rather than another number between Finn and Rachel (Lea Michele). With the help of Mercedes’ newfound confidence, her romance with Sam is slowly becoming believable.  Hopefully it doesn’t string on too long to become another “will they, wont they” scenario.

Glee 3.10 "Yes/No" Recap - Decisions, Decisions

Glee returns from the holidays with its twisty mid-season premiere “Yes/No," which sees Will working out a way to propose to Emma as Finn turns over a decision on his future, and Becky's gaze falls on none other than Artie Abrams for her new man.

Don’t have the time to spare?  Then here's what you missed on Glee’s “Yes/No!”

The McKinley high girls inquisitively question Mercedes about her summer fling with Sam, while the boys question Sam in a similar manner, before the scene turns into an impromptu rendition of Grease’s “Summer Lovin’!”  Because, you know, this has anything to do with anything.

With the voice of the Queen of England (Helen Mirren, naturally) as her inner monologue, Becky thinks of herself as the hottest and most accomplished girl in the school, before settling on Artie as the man for her. »

"Glee" Episode 310 Recap: We Found Love in a Swimming Pool

18 January 2012 5:10 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Ten minutes into Glee's first episode since abandoning us to a month-long post-holiday hiatus, I was tentatively optimistic.

The Tumblrati had made it clear to me that we would not be seeing much of our darling queer little Brittana and Klaine in this episode (although I was hopeful about the all-girl rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face") so the bar for my expectations of homo-liciousness was set very, very low.

And although lately everything to do with Will Schuester has been boring me, I always liked him and Emma, and this seemed to be a Wemma-centric episode.

Minute eleven, however, crapped all over that. (Note: all time measurements in this recap are gross approximations. I don't actually time-stamp the show. Really, capturing all this word-for-word dialogue is hard enough.) So let's linger in the first ten minutes as long as possible.

Fox A scene from “Glee.”

Now, that’s how you do a cliffhanger.

Rachel Berry’s answer is up in the air after Finn popped the question in tonight’s “Yes/No” episode. Was it a promise ring? Or was it really a marriage proposal? Is Finn nuts? Rachel, really?

Does he not recall her giving him a creepy-eyed Lana-Del-Ray-on-snl sing-along to David Guetta’s “Without You”? The gesture was over the top; hers even more so.

Glee Recap: Lords of the Rings [Updated]

Everything’s better with a little Helen Mirren — and Glee is no exception to the rule. Of course, everything’s also better with some righteous plot development that stays true to core characters, and that point was also driven home in “Yes/No,” the show’s first new episode of 2012, and (in my humble opinion) best episode of Season 3.

The news that Coach Beiste had eloped with Cooter Menkins over the winter break not only elicited a verbal barb from Sue Sylvester that was on par with any insult she ever spat back in her Season 1 heyday (offering her congrats »

The Best & Worst Moments at the 2012 Golden Globes

15 January 2012 9:46 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Last year, we (and everyone else in Hollywood) mistakenly thought Ricky Gervais would never be asked to host an awards show – much less the actual Golden Globes – again. But the Hollywood Foreign Press Association proved they could take a joke by inviting the sharp-tongued Englishman back for a repeat performance.

But Gervais was slightly kinder and gentler this time around, taking a rather laissez faire attitude toward the Globes. He'd pop up for extended bits one moment and then stick to just announcing the next – usually with a drink in hand.

Although there weren't any huge upsets or disappointments (except for perhaps Madonna, who managed to be both unfunny and unappealing both times she went on stage), we still had plenty of Best and Worst moments to remember the night by until next year.
