A Forgettable Low Budget Movie from the 80's
13 June 2003 | by (Los Angeles) – See all my reviews

While nursing a stress related illness, I was unable to get any sleep and around five in the morning I turned on the Movie Channel and caught this irritating film about a struggling actor who becomes the spokes person for a network run by

Aryan religious fanatical racists. This is one of those low budget 80's movies that only a small number of people will see. If your sick, have insomnia, and are

watching the television all night long, than this is the kind of movie you might end up catching. On the other hand, if your going to somebody's house to watch videos don't expect them to flip on "You Talkin' to Me? What makes the picture irritating are the characters. The lead, Bronson Green, always makes the wrong behavioral choices while trying to impress Hollywood agents, celebrities, and stage directors; which ends up getting him fired from a theatrical job. There is nothing to like about this character. The rest of the cast consist of preachy loud mouth religious bigots and the daughter of the network producer, who while

being pulled into sticky situations with her newly pretty boy wannabe boyfriend, never really knows what to do with herself. The main problem with the picture is the weak plot in which the screenwriter is not quite sure what the film is about or what he is trying to say. Is it about the difficulties of getting a job in Hollywood? Or is it about the evils of racism? You Talkin' to Me? starts off well with a struggling actor believing he can make it in the business by leaning towards the style of Robert De Niro, but it ends up being this obnoxious tale centering on the insanity of a religious bigot who preaches that God had given the United States to the white man and always trembles whenever he sees blacks. It is probably a good thing that not too many people will see this movie, since it plays it safe by avoiding the violence of Taxi Driver and ultimately fails in telling a story.
