A fun, often sweet Romantic Comedy that falls apart a little before the end
15 February 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Sometimes a terrific cast and director can make an average script work. However, sometimes not even brilliant actors can save a sinking ship. This is the case with a lot of Romantic Comedies, which are a big deal right now. It's sad to see really talented people wasting it in cliché, mostly or completely unfunny, and often trite RomComs, but it's a pattern that keeps repeating. Occasionally the right ingredients are brought together and we get an exception to the rule. This sub-genre has been around for a while and by comparison ones from 20+ years ago and ones of today differ quite a bit. Take this little known effort from the Cannon Group, which is far from being one of the best, but is well above average thanks to those involved. By this point Sally Field had won two Oscars and Michael nominated twice, so you know this couldn't be so bad.

Pros: Great cast and performances. Nice score. Writer/director Jerry Belson gets some interesting shots and gives this more style than you would expect. Pace just zips right along. Often very funny situations and dialogue. Pretty good concept for Comedy. Has some nice surprises and good ideas.

Cons: Humor doesn't always hit the mark. Really dated. Throws in too many twists in the last third.

Final thoughts: Don't let the fact that Sally Field and Michael Caine co-starred in the ill conceived 'Beyond the Poseidon Adventure' turn you away from this. It may not be a classic of the genre, but it's well above many in recent years. The script is not the best, but the cast and director bring it to life. Will put a smile on your face.

My rating: 3.5/5
