My review of tonight's "Sons of Anarchy" coming up just as soon as it's a little late for Legos... "Clay cannot be saved." -Unser Watching "Kiss," I was reminded of a line from, of all things, Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs," in which Darth Helmet explains that "evil will always triumph because good is dumb." In the course of this episode, a lot of characters - Gemma, Unser and Juice, primarily - either make or are on the verge of making incredibly dumb or naive decisions that will enormously benefit Clay or Lincoln Potter. Over the last few years, director Roland Emmerich has spoke a lot about a potential sequel (or two) to his 1996 box office hit, Independence Day. Back in early 2010 it was reported that Emmerich had signed on for two back-to-back sequels, and in late 2010 he was even dropping hints about the possible storyline saying, Will Smith‘s character may be the President of the United States in the sequels.
Emmerich said at the time,
“It’s an alternate reality kind of movie. We pick up the story, what would have happened after this kind of attack? Naturally, the alien technology has changed everything.”
Did they rebuild the White House? Who will be president?
“Or, who will be president? Who Will be president? See?”
Now it seems Will may not even be a part of the sequels. NYMag reports that Will Smith has reportedly asked 20th Century Fox for $50 million to star in the sequels, »

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to the worthwhile titles now streaming on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we look at alternatives to Footloose, The Skin I Live In and Texas Killing Fields .
This weekend music , murder and madness collide in theaters, where small-town teens discover the joys of choreography, a devastated widower delves into madness, and Texan detectives track a sadistic killer. But if these features won’t sate your cravings for badass dance moves, Spanish flavored drama, and true to life crime tales, we got you covered with a list of hot titles that are currently available online.
A town where dancing is illegal is turned upside down by a teen-aged rebel (Kenny Wormald) with the deep desire to cut loose…footloose. Craig Brewer, the subversive director behind Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan, helms this sassy remake of the »

We were delighted to hear the news that Werner Herzog is going to appear as the villain in Tom Cruise's next movie, "One Shot." Herzog's a great director, but he's an equally great screen presence. We've dug his serious movies with Harmony Korine and his silly movies with Zak Penn. We have no doubt he will prove a magnificent onscreen adversary (or topless beach volleyball teammate) for Maverick.
And while there are some directors who could stand to do more directing and less acting -- M. Night Shyamalan, Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarantino between the years 1994-1996 -- Herzog is not the only auteur with as many gifts in front of the camera as behind it. Here are our picks for the five (living and working) directors ready to take the leap from occasional cameos to working thespians. In no particular order they are:

"The Lion King" roared back into theaters and grossed nearly $30 million at the box office last weekend, all thanks to its new 3D treatment. That was enough dough to earn the re-release a No. 1 slot over "Contagion" and "Drive," and stun cynics who may have doubted audience interest in the 3D-ification of a 2D animated film. Whether or not the upcoming 3D re-releases of "Star Wars" and "Top Gun" will find similar success remains to be seen (although both are probably a safe bet).
As long as Hollywood is digging through their attics and retrofitting films for 3D, though, we've got a few proposals that could make for memorable multidimensional screenings.

John Hurt makes a convincingly cerebral spook in the new film of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. But in real life, if he were in charge of MI6, we'd be in trouble. He's too gregarious, too eager and far too puckish
John Hurt doesn't think he'd have made a good spy. "I'd have been terrible! Too transparent by half!" He scoffs happily, gimlet eyes a-twinkle. But surely actors and operatives share certain skills?
A big wise head waggle. "Don't forget there are two sides to performing. Finding the truth, but you also have to be transparent enough for the audience to see it. How many times have you seen a performance and thought: well, it seems to be meaning a great deal to you but it ain't coming across to me? It is to be shared. This isn't a grief for your own pleasure … Ah, coffee!"

Trevor Hogg profiles the career of legendary filmmaker George Lucas in the sxith of a six part feature... read parts one, two, three, four and five.
“When I was working on Young Indy [ABC, 1992 to 1993] with Harrison [Ford], the obvious occurred to me,” recalled George Lucas who had a breakthrough idea for a fourth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, “If I did it when Indy was older, I could have it be in the 1950s.” In order to tailor the action adventure to the period shift, the California filmmaker asked himself a particular question. “‘What is the equivalent of a 1930s Saturday matinee serial in the 1950s?’ Science fiction B-movies. I thought, ‘That’s the MacGuffin: aliens.’” Harrison Ford (Regarding Henry) was less enthralled with the concept. “I didn’t like it at all,” said Ford. “There’d always been a mystical element in the stories about an archeologist who wrestles with the mysterious of past cultures. »

Torchwood: Miracle Day leads the highlights of the UK TV week. But there's room for The Big Bang Theory, and a whole lot of films, too...
We're almost completely dependent on the BBC for new programming heading our way this week. But Channel 4 brings us a return of a series midstream, with episode 13 of season 4 of The Big Bang Theory. Although the nasal whining can get a bit much at times, there's lots of geeky goodness to be found in the show, with guaranteed references to games, shows and films we know well and love. We have a Lazy Geek's Guide here that may help you decide if it's worth the couch commitment, and The Love Car Displacement episode airs tonight, Friday July 8th, at 11:05pm.
It looks like the popularity of X-Men: First Class and Mad Men, among others, has firmly established our recent enjoyment of period drama, »

Holiday shopping for your dad got about 80% easier. Shout Factor (and generally speaking the power of the Schwartz, no doubt) is releasing a box set of the works of legendary comedy writer/director Mel Brooks that celebrates the 85-year-old's long career in the biz.
Brooks, who won an Oscar for his 1968 screenplay for The Producers starring Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder-- and no doubt received a noice paycheck for the remake with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick--was also responsible for Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, both of which utilized the wonderful comic actress Madeline Kahn and ranked in AFI's Top 100 Comedies. Plus History Of The World, Part 1 and Spaceballs.

Never underestimate the power of the Schwartz! So says Shout Factory, which is teaming up with legendary comedy stud Mel Brooks to produce a DVD box set celebrating the influential writer-director's lengthy career. Brooks -- who won an Oscar for his screenplay for "The Producers" and is responsible for more than a few seminal slapstick films, including "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein" and "Spaceballs" (which is where the opening quote of this article comes from) -- will be heavily involved in the retrospective. Seeing Bill Pullman step into the shoes of convicted murderer Oswald Danes in "Torchwood: Miracle Day," you can't help but think of John Lithgow's Emmy-winning turn as the "Trinity Killer" on "Dexter." The familiar, comforting actor you've watched for decades has been hijacked by someone else.
Being on the other end of the camera, Pullman has a hard time seeing it that way.
"I don't think of myself as scary," he told Zap2it when we met with him on the set of the Starz and BBC co-production. "You're seeing a guy who has lived in a dark place, unrepentantly, expecting to die -- and he lives. And then it's a new journey that may or may not bring all that baggage with him."
Said baggage includes being the face of "Miracle Day," the premise for the new season which kicks off the moment people on earth stop dying. »

On Torchwood, Gwen Cooper has faced down extraterrestrial threats to life on Earth and always survived. But Eve Myles, the actress who plays Gwen, shooting Torchwood: Miracle Day involved a terrifying new challenge: Driving on the right-hand side of the road.

“I’ve been petrified for I don’t know how long,” recounts the Welsh-born actress between takes on the show’s Burbank set. “And I thought if this is going to be like the first time I rode a bike, where I went straight towards a wall, so I covered my eyes with my hands and hit the wall, please don’t do this in the car.”
Torchwood, a spin-off of the legendary Doctor Who series, has enjoyed widespread popularity in the United Kingdom and a fervent fanbase in the U.S. With the show’s fourth season, »
