Siesta is an unabashed art film with a central theme of obsession, a supernatural twist, gorgeous Spanish locations and terrific performances by an ensemble cast of some of the most talented and interesting actors around in the late nineteen eighties. There is truth and mystery in this film, not surprising the former since it is based on the real life experiences of novelist and memoirist Patrice Chaplin. The director Mary Lambert, straight out of the music video world at the time, brings the mystery with a confident hand and some really stunning imagery. This film is not afraid to be pretentious and artsy at times and will be best appreciated by viewers who like mood pieces. The soundtrack by Marcus Miller stands on its own with Miles Davis revisiting Spain as guest soloist.
