6 Filmmaking Tips From The Coen Brothers

23 May 2012 11:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

There are a lot of stories about colleagues and reporters asking Joel and Ethan Coen questions only to get the same exact answer from both (or to get one finishing the other’s sentence), so it seems at least plausible that they’d both agree on all these tips – no matter which brother they came from. Joel Coen got his start as an assistant editor on Fear No Evil and The Evil Dead. He and his brother then partnered for their first movie without the word “evil” in the title, Blood Simple., which rightly launched them to prominence where they’d go on to craft Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, countless other modern classics and a trophy case for all their awards. All of this fulfilled a childhood dream of making movies that started with a Super 8 camera and a hobby of remaking what they saw on television. So here’s a bit of free film »

'Underworld: Awakening' and 'The Vow' Hit DVD and Blu-ray This Week

8 May 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Before we get started here, I thought some of you may be interested in the fact you can buy the four film Coen Brothers' Blu-ray set from Fox for $24.99 right now, which includes Blood Simple, Fargo, Miller's Crossing and Raising Arizona. If you're interested, just click here to pick it up. There's also an interesting ten-film John Wayne DVD collection featured in the "Even More" section of today's post.

Underworld: Awakening I like this film and they sent me the Blu-ray, but I haven't yet had a chance to watch it. All the Underworld films starring Kate Beckinsale I find quite fun. It's big, loud and dumb fun as far as I'm concerned and I don't really know if I make a special exception for this franchise over others, but based on how this one ends I do hope they go forward with one more, but as Underworld: Rise of the Lycans proved, »

7 May 2012 5:17 PM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Oscar would like to ask you out on a date.

While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may seem like a highly restrictive group — and it is, if you want to win one of those golden statuettes — the organization is expanding its outreach to regular moviegoers by announcing a summer-long series of outdoor movies.

“Oscars Outdoors” will showcase films on Fridays and Saturdays on a 40-by-20 foot screen in a park the organization built in the heart of Hollywood specifically for the sake of showing movies under the stars. The public is welcome, and the Academy is especially »

Duplass brothers: 'Our movies can't lose money'

3 May 2012 4:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Duplass brothers helped pioneer the lo-fi mumblecore movement. But will they change their style now big stars are knocking on their door?

Directing duo Jay and Mark Duplass missed out on membership of the Star Wars generation. Or, rather, they turned it down – albeit unwittingly. "I was born in 1973," says Jay, the elder by three years. "Perfect timing, but I just didn't care. I guess we were already on the hunt for grownup adult dramas. HBO broadcast Kramer vs Kramer and Ordinary People. All our friends were obsessed with Star Wars and we were obsessed with hard-hitting relationship dramas."

They laugh at the sensible, grownup boys they once were.

Mark: "Silkwood. We're like, eight!"

Jay: "We've only recently acknowledged to ourselves how ridiculous that seems."

Mark: "Midnight Express!"

Jay: "You'd come home from school and An Unmarried Woman would be on TV. We'd just go: 'I guess this is »

Hollywood & Politics: Ann Coulter on Why America Hates Hollywood (Opinion)

26 April 2012 10:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

This story originally appeared in the May 4 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. Americans love movies and would like to love Hollywood, but I suspect they are getting a little sick of Hollywood hating them. By "them," I mean: ► Southerners (as portrayed in A Time to Kill, Deliverance, Easy Rider, Talladega Nights, Pulp Fiction, Raising Arizona and Law & Order) ► Residents of small towns, except the Hamptons and Malibu (Footloose, The Last Seduction, Pleasantville and Law & Order) ► Christians (The Virgin Suicides, Easy A, Seven, Straw Dogs, Carrie and Law & Order) ► Connecticut WASPs or

The Director and Actors of "Gayby" Talk About Unconventional Babymaking

23 April 2012 1:07 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Jenn Harris and Matthew Wilkas in a scene from Gayby.

Gayby was first made as a 12-minute short film by director/writer Jonathan Lisecki. The premise of the short was fairly straight-forward (no pun intended) -- and a tad bit bizarre. Jenn (Jenn Harris) wants to have a baby so she solicits the help of her gay best friend Matt (Matthew Wilkas). He agrees to help, but she wants to conceive without the help of a turkey baster. Yup. You heard that right. She wants to conceive the old fashioned way: sex. Sex with her gay best friend.

After gaining traction at over a hundred film festivals, Lisecki decided to blow it up into a full feature-length film, and with the help of the short's two original stars, the film made its world premiere at this year's South by Southwest film festival in Austin -- and people liked it. They liked it a lot. »

Yahoo! Lists the 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die

10 April 2012 11:00 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

It's not easy to put together a top 100 of just about anything, but the folks over at Yahoo! Movies have really thrown down the gauntlet this time with a list of the 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die. In describing the list, they maintain that their goal was to choose the "funniest" movies out there, not necessarily the "best" comedies. With that in mind, you might think they'd stay away from critically acclaimed classics and lean more toward low brow, quick and easy laughfests. But you'd be wrong. There are a lot of classics on this list, everything from The Apartment to Dr. Strangelove to Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times and Buster Keaton's The General. There are also movies on here that aren't really "comedies" per se, such as Pulp Fiction and Martin Scorsese's After Hours. More than anything, this serves as a reminder that what is »

The Criminal Complex Line: What Are The Odds That Inside Llewyn Davis Will Turn Out To Be A Crime Movie?

8 April 2012 6:12 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Though largely regarded as humorists, directors Joel and Ethan Coen have produced some of the finest crime movies ever committed to film.  Blood Simple, Miller’s Crossing, and their adaptation of No Country for Old Men are straight-ahead crime movies enriched with the Coens’ visual style and lip-smacking dialogue.  Even Fargo, though the thick Minnesota dialect draws huge laughs, couldn’t be more of a crime movie.

The Coens, though, have diverted from their crime path here and there, not that you’re going to hear me complaining.  But lighter comedies like their remake of The Ladykillers or their more darkly comical A Serious Man hover around the crime genre like eyewitnesses.  However, their current effort, which began shooting this past February, Inside Llewyn Davis, is an examination of the folk music scene in 1960s Greenwich Village.  This subject matter itself would severely test my enthusiasm if it was anyone but the Coens making it. »

'Raging Bull 2,' Starring William Forsythe, Announced; Will Anyone Care?

5 April 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So far, for all the sequel mania that's swept Hollywood, the films of Martin Scorsese remain untouched. Sure, you could perhaps argue that "Casino" is a follow-up to "Goodfellas," in spirit rather than in content, but we've so far been spared "Cape Fear 2: Max Takes Manhattan," "Kundun 2: The Quickening" or "New York New York: Tokyo Drift," either from the director himself or from lesser helmers, even as we get follow-ups to everything from "Tron" to "Road House."

But it looks as though our unbroken run is over, and someone's had the giant balls to sequelize perhaps Scorsese's greatest movie, no less. Moviehole report that casting is currently underway on "Raging Bull II," a follow-up to the director's biopic of boxer Jake Lamotta. Based on the book of the same name by Lamotta, Chris Anderson and Sharon McGehee, which examines both the early life and the events after those told in the Scorsese picture, »

The Complex’s Ten Greatest Henchmen In Movie History

3 April 2012 4:56 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Say you’re putting together a syndicate.  One of the first things that you are going to need is somebody to take care of your light work for you when words have run out.  As a means of determining the appropriate skill set for this oh-so-important addition to your workforce, the Complex has assembled a ranking of some of the more legendary henchman ever to grace the screen.  You know, as a way to gauge some of the qualities you might be looking for.

In ranking these heavies, extra points were earned for singularity of purpose, imperviousness to pain, and skill within the realm of hand-to-hand combat.  Points were taken away for any actions tantamount to a betrayal of the henchman’s employer, or conspicuous behavior likely to cause more trouble than harm.

Here’s how they shook out.

The 9 Best Irish Mafia Movies

17 March 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

When most people hear the word "Mafia," it conjures up images of "The Godfather," "Goodfellas" and "The Sopranos." But Italian-Americans are hardly the only ethnic group to establish large organized crime rings.

Irish mobsters regularly challenged the Cosa Nostra for territory throughout American history -- and like their Italian counterparts, their conquests have made for some damn fine movies, dating all the way back to the James Cagney vehicles of the 1930s.

So this St. Patrick's Day, do your part as an educated movie fan and revisit the best Irish Mafia films of all time. We guarantee you'll feel better than your Irish Car Bomb-chugging friends the morning after.

'Raising Arizona' 25th Anniversary: 25 Things You Didn't Know About The Coen Brothers' Classic Comedy

"Son, you got a panty on your head." Not a month goes by when I don't find some excuse to quote that line, or "As in, 'to swing'?", or some other randomly uproarious line from "Raising Arizona." The classic Coen Brothers comedy, the source of so much endlessly quotable bizarre but hilarious lines, turns 25 this month. Released on March 6, 1987 in one theater in New York, the film spent the rest of March 1987 opening slowly across the country, gradually becoming a cult favorite before being recognized as a cinematic landmark. It was the movie that launched Joel and Ethan Coen into the wider consciousness of filmgoers, it gave Nicolas Cage his first real adult leading role, it gave early career breaks to John Goodman and William Forsythe, and it helped make Holly Hunter an overnight sensation. Plus, it gave us the immortal, iconic image of Cage, as feckless baby-napper and convenience store stick-up man H. »

Q&A: 'Jeff' Directors Mark and Jay Duplass on Lovable Losers and Susan Sarandon

14 March 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Director siblings Mark and Jay Duplass have always made movies about the "epically small" things in life -- a puffy chair, a bag on someone’s head, a missing pair of sneakers -- and how big they can become in the right situation.

After attending the University of Texas, the brothers became associated with the Mumblecore micro-budget filmmaking movement out of Austin. Their Diy films, "The Puffy Chair" and "Baghead," got the mainstream’s attention; yet they maintained the same aesthetic principles even after their 2010 studio debut "Cyrus."

The pair is in top form with "Jeff, Who Lives at Home," which has their films' trademark vulnerability, raw tension and clumsy relationships. The movie centers on stoner/couch philosopher Jeff (Jason Segel) who, sent on an errand by his mother (Susan Sarandon), ends up on a quest to fulfill his destiny. His brother Pat (Ed Helms) also enlists Jeff’s help »

Wamg Interview: Jay Duplass – Director of Jeff Who Lives At Home

12 March 2012 6:27 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Interview conducted by Tom Stockman November 18th 2011

The Writer/Director team of Jay Duplass and his brother Mark are responsible for movies like The Puffy Chair, Baghead, and Cyrus. Mumblecore is the designated phrase for a loosely allied circle of young American filmmakers including the Duplass brothers that utilizes a low-budget, documentary-style approach for  independently-made films. The Duplass brother.s shooting style is quite unusual compared to most filmmakers. They shoot in sequence, the camerawork is practically all handheld, and they hardly stick to the dialog on page. Their formula is different, but obviously works and  their films have been critically praised. Jay Duplass was in St. Louis recently for a screening of his newest film Jeff Who Lives At Home at the St. Louis International Film festival. A day in the life of the pot-smoking Jeff (played by Jason Segel) who looks for signs from the universe to determine his path, »

Is it Christmas already? Yesterday we got a brand new trailer for "Men In Black 3" and today Sony Pictures has given us a whole bunch of new stills from the movie, some of which feature a first look at Jemaine Clement as the film's main antagonist! The stills also give us a look at Alice Eve, who plays a young Agent Oh, and of course Josh Brolin, who plays a young Agent K.

"Men In Black 3" takes place primarily in the 1960's as Agent J (Will Smith) must travel back in time to prevent an alien assassin from deleting his friend and partner Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) from history. It looks to be one time traveling sci-fi adventure that we won't soon forget. And these new photos definitely don't say otherwise. Check them out after the jump!
