When Susanna McKaskel shows pictures to Con Vallian, she tells him that her brother and friends are building a house for them at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains just west of Fort Kearney. The mountains of the Bighorn National Forest near Sheridan, Wyoming are over 700 miles from where Fort Kearney was located in central Nebraska. Also, none of the peaks are as high as the snow-covered peak shown in the final scenes of the movie. See more »

Bizarre Western
21 January 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This is truly one of the strangest westerns I've ever seen. And it's very unique in its strangeness. And it's this strange uniqueness that makes it somewhat watchable.

The main thing that's strange about the film is Sam Elliot's character, a protagonist named Con who saves a family from a bunch of killers. Con is obsessively creepy and he talks with a smirk half the time! Right out of the gate, Con tells the wife that if the husband should get killed, she would then have to "choose" between him and the killers. He says this right in front of the husband, which is his style. In another scene, Con secretly watches the wife take a shower in a waterfall, and we get a close-up of his face which is both mesmerized and intense with a laser-like focus. Much of the movie is actually like this! This is like the style of the movie.

The gang of killers is led by an actor who probably delivers the best performance in the whole movie. I don't think I'll ever forget the "splitting up the loot" scene. In the end though, the killers are plagued by traits that are just as strange. Even after half of their group has been killed, they trek on through impossible weather conditions for miles, ostensibly because one of the killers is obsessed with raping Kate Capshaw (the wife).

There are many films with the same title. I can't compare it to most of them except for the 1995 film with Sharon Stone. There are no similarities between the two. They are completely different stories.
