The name of Joanna (Goldie Hawn)'s luxury yacht in the movie was the "S.S. Immaculata". The boat was portrayed by the vessel "Attessa", and was also used for the film Indecent Proposal (1993). DVD sleeve notes have said "the 130th Stayton yacht, bedecked in crystal chandeliers and velvet cheetah upholstery, was docked in Fort Bragg's Noyo Harbor". The vessel had a Kong & Halvorsen hull from 1984, was called "Yecats" at the time Overboard (1987) was filmed, was renamed "Huntress" at some point, had a small helipad on the aft deck, and was later lengthened to 142 feet. The Kong & Halvorsen '130' 'Yecats' yacht was later destroyed in a fire, but the crew and passengers all survived.
Overboard (1987) was released in 1987. In The Best of Times (1986) starring Kurt Russell, released just the year before, there are references to "Gigi", who is Kurt Russell's character's wife and also one of the opposing football players was known as "Dr. Death". In Overboard the letters "G.G." are spray painted on the boys' club house and they also refer to "Dr. Death" coming to rescue their "mother". Both movies star Kurt Russell.
When Annie is using the chainsaw, she accidentally cuts off the scarecrow's head. Behind the right "eye" of the scarecrow is a hexagonal patch that is a slight nod to A Clockwork Orange (1971), and its main character's famous eye lashes.
