I'm surprised that no-one has reviewed this movie, it's not a classic but it's a well-made story. It's interesting to see wild-west culture South American style - it gives us a different take on the subject.
Claudia Ohana is one of Brazil's greatest actresses, and she certainly shows it here. Instead of her usually sexy self, here she plays a backcountry farmhand, a girl forced by circumstances to become a "cowboy". The reasons have to do with the murder of her family by greedy cattle-barons, but I don't want to give too much away. Having to succeed in this macho world takes a fair amount of effrontery, but Luzia pulls it off nicely.
I certainly recommend Luzia Homem over more recent movies like Central Station, it's worth the effort to find.
