Exclusive: 'I…Vampire' Writer Joshua Hale Fialkov's Top 5 Vampire Sagas

7 December 2011 8:00 AM, PST | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

One of the perhaps lesser known vampire sagas of the last twenty-five years is I…Vampire, writer J. M. DeMatteis's comic about a vampire lord and his lover/rival that ran in DC's House of Mystery from 1981 to 1983. As part of its "New 52", DC has just relaunched the comic, with writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and artist Andrea Sorrentino, to positive reviews. After the jump, learn what Fialkov considers the top 5 vampire sagas of all time. "1.) I'm gonna cheat and say Richard Matheson's I Am Legend. Technically they're vampires. Barely, but technically they're vampires. And then 2.) Buffy and Angel. I'll even lump those two together. 3.) The Lost Boys. I'm crazy about Lost Boys. »

Exploding Head Video Montage!

4 December 2011 3:48 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

There's nothin' better than seeing a head explode on the big screen. Head explosions are always a dementedly fun little movie shock. YouTube user iiAFX has created a video montage showing off 61 head explosions from 61 different films. It's safe to say that this video is Nsfw and if you have kids I would suggest not watching it in front of them because exploding heads are considered extremely bloody and violent. This video is just ridiculous, but if exploding heads is your thing then you're sure to enjoy it! Check it out and tell us what you think!

Movie List (in order with video):

1. Hott Fuzz

2. Scanners

3. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

4. Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Top Ten Non-twilight related Vampire Movies

21 November 2011 10:55 AM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

In honor of Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1 raking in $139 million on opening weekend, I decided to compile my top ten non-Twilight vampire movies for NapiersNews.com. Let’s face it vampires are a hot commodity, and whether you love or hat Twilight you have to be happy that the franchise has spawned more interest in vampires.

Here is an excerpt of my top ten non-Twilight vampire movies:

10. Shadow Of The Vampire (2000)

John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, Cary Elwes and Udo Kieer star. The filming of Nosferatu is hampered by the fact that the star is taking his role far more seriously than what seems humanly possible. The movie has drama, horror and comedy rolled into one.

9. Once Bitten (1985)

Jim Carrey  stars in one of his early roles in this campy 80′s horror comedy. The story follows a vampire Countess needs to drink the blood of a virgin in order to keep her eternal beauty. »

Black and Blue Films have released the first trailer for Elfie Hopkins which stars Jaime Winstone in the titlular role of a quirky “wanna-be” detective whose appetite for a real-life case is matched by the appetites of a new family, The Gammons, played by Rupert Evans (Hellboy) and Kate Magowan (Primeval), who move into the village.

Ray Winstone (father of Jaime) plays the local butcher in the film directed by Ryan Andrews, who also wrote the screenplay. The film also stars Aneurin Barnard (Ironclad), Kimberley Nixon (Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging, Easy Virtue), Will Payne and Kate Magowan.

Nine Directors in Need of a Career 'Pick Me Up'

10 November 2011 10:01 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

After recently watching Trespass on Blu-ray, The Ward on Netflix Instant and catching J. Edgar on its early rollout, I began to notice a trend of legendary and/or highly touted filmmakers who have tailed off in recent years. So I began thinking of other helmers that have fallen onto similar hard times and came up with a list of nine who, in my opinion, have lost their fastball. It's important to note that while it's difficult to evaluate all of these directors on an equal scale, all of these names were selected based on one basic criteria: their recent output has failed to live up to their once impressive past. Outside the nine below, there were a few I others I considered. Directors such as Bryan Singer, Tim Burton, Stephen Frears and Cameron Crowe, but ultimately I didn't think their declines were as steep as those I chose to profile, »

Game Review: 'Infamous: Festival of Blood'

7 November 2011 11:01 AM, PST | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Infamous: Festival of Blood (guess developer Sucker Punch dropped the 2 somewhere between the first reveal and the final release) wears its light heart—and its vampiric inspirations—on its sleeve.  The game opens up with a rockabilly goofball named Zeke, the pompadour-wearing sidekick to series protagonist Cole McGrath, trying his hardest to pick up a woman in a bar, explaining that the "kiddie book" that he is reading is no mere comic, but instructions on how to deal with the undead.  Ok, Sucker Punch, you've referenced The Lost Boys already and you're not even in the game proper?  You've got my attention. Festival of Blood comes across as A Very Infamous Halloween Special, with »

The Broken-Bat Bet

4 November 2011 1:48 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The class that oozed out of every single minute of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight has ensured its place in movie history. And as the unrelenting glut of superhero movies in the past 10 years finally dissipates, it’s pretty much the only one that will be a mainstay in top lists for many years to come. Couple this with the critical & commercial success of 2010’s Inception and it’s easy to understand why the final part of Nolan’s Batman trilogy is gearing up to be an absolute monster. The Dark Knight Rises is a long way from reaching our cinema screens but the intrigue and excitement that followed the announcement of the ‘bad-guy’, alongside the first teaser trailer, is the subtle opening string quartet for what is nearly sure to be a great big crescendo.

The bad guy in question? Bane.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Great choice. In general, »

Call-In Commentary: Watch the "Trespass" trailer with director Joel Schumacher

24 October 2011 3:14 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

As famed director Joel Schumacher puts it, his new film "Trespass" is ostensibly about the "haves" versus the "have nots," but only on its face. In the movie, Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman live a wealthy existence in an exclusive gated community. Everything is seemingly perfect: Cage is wrapped up in his business and Kidman is fascinated by the sexy new handy man (Cam Gigandet). But things start to unravel once "Animal Kingdom" star Ben Mendelsohn launches an armed home invasion of their mansion, and the film descends into betrayal, deception and other salacious labels.

Schumacher has delivered thirty years worth of memorable films, among them "St. Elmo's Fire," "The Lost Boys," "Falling Down" and "Tigerland," so it was a thrill for him to participate in our Call-In Commentary series, where directors provide narration for their movie trailers. In the video below, hear the "Trespass" filmmaker discuss Nicole's predilection for bare feet, »
