TV Review: James Franco’s ‘Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?’

17 June 2016 4:14 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

James Franco makes “art” at the rate most people eat breakfast — he has over 20 projects (no exaggeration) in various stages of production this year — and so exactly where Lifetime’s remake of the 1996 telepic “Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?” rates among his priorities is hard to guess. Franco executive produced, has a minor supporting role, and is credited with the “story” for this subversively desperate (or maybe desperately subversive?) reimagining that takes a shopworn woman-in-peril story and turns it into a slightly less shopworn lesbian vampire romance.

Franco’s vision for “Mother” isn’t so much influenced by the kitschy appeal of the original movie (or the novel by Claire Rainwater Jacobs, which no doubt has zero overlap with what’s here beyond the title), as it is by “Twilight,” queer theory, college theater, and Smashing Pumpkins music videos. We know this because all of these things are directly referenced on camera (except Smashing Pumpkins, though »

Corey Feldman Is a Cross-Dressing Vampire in Corbin Nash Preview

5 June 2016 2:59 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It's been a long time since Corey Feldman has graced the big screen, as he focuses on his musical career and role as a parent. Selective about the roles he plays nowadays, he was immediately attracted to the character of Queeny in Corbin Nash, a cross-dressing vampire out for blood. Et Canada recently caught up with the former teen idol turned Hollywood icon to chat about the movie. You can see Corey as Queeny for the first time in the video below. He had this to say about taking on the strange, scary new job.

"This is totally outside of the box. It takes all of the other stuff and goes, 'That's comic book, that's fairy tale!' What if vampires were really real? And that's what I think this is. It's a reality version of what vampires would be in today's society."

A recent interview with Elijah Wood has reignited the conversation on pedophilia in the entertainment business. The Lord of the Rings star later clarified first to The Hollywood Reporter and then on his personal Twitter account that his comments about "something major ... going on in Hollywood" were based not on his own experiences and observations but rather on news reports and the 2015 documentary film An Open Secret. But another former child actor — Corey Feldman, star of such iconic 1980s movies as The Goonies, Stand By Me and The Lost Boys — was not so lucky. In past interviews, his A&E

Bloodsucking Bosses DVD Review

17 May 2016 3:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Horror is a massively popular genre. It more than any other genre seems to have weathered the storm of time and hasn’t ever really disappeared. That being said, there is one sub-niche of the genre that is in danger of dying out, the comedy horror. Back in the Eighties and early Nineties they were ten a penny, but recent years have seen them shelved in favour of the jump-scare traditional fright tests. It’s a shame because when done right the horror comedy can be a thing of beauty. Luckily there are still a few out there brave enough to tackle the sub genre and this week sees Brian James O’Connell‘s Bloodsucking Bosses land on DVD.

Bloodsucking Bosses is a horror comedy for the office workers of the world. The story follows downtrodden office worker Evan (Fran Kanz) who, after being overlooked for a promotion, starts to »

Cannes 2016: The Transfiguration review

14 May 2016 10:14 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The Transfiguration review: Michael O’Shea impresses with this slow-burning drama. The debut filmmaker makes his directorial and Cannes debut with the film, which plays in Un Certain Regard.

The Transfiguration review from Cannes, 2016.

The Transfiguration review

The Transfiguration plays at Cannes 2016 as part of the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, and is the debut feature from writer and director Michael O’Shea, a native of Brooklyn, New York where the film is set.

Eric Luffin, a young actor best known for his work on the TV series The Good Wife, plays Milo, a troubled individual who has a penchant for vampire movies and a worrying lust for blood. We’re introduced to him in a New York City toilet block where an observer hears strange noises coming from one of the cubicles. Upon investigating he sees that two bodies are visible from underneath the door – though it »

Cannes Film Review: ‘The Transfiguration’

14 May 2016 7:04 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In contemporary New York, a bullied teenager is plagued by an apparent need to drink human blood — an instinct he fulfills without much trouble, leaving a modest trail of corpses in his wake, even as he forms a tentative bond with a lonely young neighbor. The debut feature from Brooklyn-born writer-director Michael O’Shea, “The Transfiguration” seemingly came from nowhere to secure a premiere in the Un Certain Regard strand at Cannes, generating buzz aplenty — but does it deliver? A morose tone and reluctance to give up the goods as a straight-up horror film may make distributors at the splat-tastic end of the genre spectrum wary. Outfits inclined towards arthouse slow-burners, however, should have an easier time packaging its nihilistic conclusions as existential depth.

There’s wearing your heart on your sleeve, and then there’s “The Transfiguration,” an addition to the extensive onscreen vampire canon whose influences are name-checked throughout. »

Scream Factory/IFC Midnight Gets Psychological and Creepy with June Bluray/DVD release of The Abandoned

6 May 2016 2:21 PM, PDT | | See recent Icons of Fright news »

I tend to really enjoy the majority of the films that are released through the Scream Factory/IFC Midnight partnership. Sure the Scream Factory releases alone are worthy of fanaticism, but it’s just as fun to get up and coming indie horror films to check out as well. Case in point: The June 7th Bluray/DVD release of the Louisa Krause/Jacon Patric-led psychological horror film The Abandoned. I’ve liked a good amount of films featuring Krause (Martha Marcy May Marlene is a favorite of mine) and well, who doesn’t want to see Jason Patric do more genre films?
