The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

Suggested MPAA description: Rated 'PG-13' for Intense Thematic Material Involving Sexuality/Nudity, Violence, Drug Use, and Brief Strong Language.

We see rear and full-frontal nudity of a three-year-old as he is being bathed.

Two instances where we see the bare breasts of a wet nurse as she breastfeeds a boy, even at the age of eight.

We see a man and his two wives cavorting under the covers (only their figures covered by the sheets are visible), but they are interrupted by a eunuch.

Many eunuchs are featured in the film. Several are shown carrying jars which contain their testicles.

A woman questions her husband as to why he "won't make love" to her anymore.

One woman sucks another woman's toes as they smoke opium.

Violence & Gore

A man attempts suicide by slitting his wrists, we hear the cuts and as he submerges his hands in a water-filled sink, we see blood cloud the water. Later, blood-soaked bandages are shown on his wrists.

We see an up-close view of a young boy's feces in a bowl, as a eunuch smells them to see if he is properly nourished. Not violent or gory, but definitely gross.

We hear fire outside a man's bedroom and see flames outside the window, the result of arson.

One man threatens another with a pistol.

A man is shot in the head from behind, and blood spurts from his head.

We hear a gunshot and see that a man has shot himself in the head; we see the bullet wound and a pool of blood form underneath.

There is archival footage of war atrocities including actual executions by gunfire as well as several close-ups of decomposed bodies. There is footage of a hand, badly burned from radiation, being treated.

Profanity

The word "fuck" is said once near the end of the film.

Opium is shown being produced, sold, and used. Two of the principle characters are shown smoking opium. One is shown at several stages of her descent into addiction.

Wine is consumed at various parties throughout the film.

It is implied that a baby is killed by injection.
