It was third film to play on the opening night of Edgar Wright's (Shaun of the Dead) film festival following Bugsy Malone and Phantom of the Paradise as part of a triple screening that went until 3:45 AM at the New Beverly Cinema in Hollywood. Paul Williams who wrote the music to those movies and lyrics to the joke songs in Ishtar was there.
Mr. Wright had never seen Ishtar, so the movie was secretly shown, not listed on the flyer. He brough up Tarantino, an expert on the film, presumably the owner of the 35mm print shown.
Tarantino loves the movie, perhaps a little too much, but he is probably right to say that critics reviewed the budget and production schedule, and not the film, which is not nearly as bad as everyone says. For the record I thought the movie was pretty funny, but had some weak plot points. The songs are intentionally bad, which is not something I was told, when shown clips from the movie that are compiled in order to make fun of it.
They showed the preview for Hudson Hawk, now that movie is bad.
