Glen (Stephen Dorff when he was a child), and his annoying sister Al (Christa Denton) have to spend a weekend alone, because their parents (Deborah Grover and Scott Denton) are travelling out of the state. Al has convinced them that she is responsible enough to babysit her little bro, but what she has in mind is to give a small party for her friends.
Glen is convinced by his eccentric, nerd-like friend Terry (Louis Tripp) that the hole in their front garden may be the door to hell. They try to cover it, but they find a green-like egg. It's a hard object, but it gives a kind of greenish smoke when it gets broken.
Al's friends are annoying. They try levitation and ouija with Glen, and he goes up, floating to the ceiling. Soon they have to fight a series of demons they have freed. Several incidents/illusions happen, and their beloved dog is killed. The instructions to trap the demons back inside the hole of the garden are within the lyrics of the song of some rock group, which used to be interested in the occult. Its main singer had committed suicide, as Terry explains Glen. They devise a plan and perform it.
When they think they have won, they haven't. At first Al wouldn't let Glen phone their parents, later they can't, because the kitchen phone doesn't work. The body of one of the brickmen who had built the house terrorise the children, appearing from inside one of the walls, where he had been buried. Many small demons lurk around. Al falls through the hell hole, and manages to go out just in time.
At the end, after the danger is over, the good point is that the siblings -Al and Glen- become friends. The bad point is that their home has been wrekaged by the supernatural events, and they know their parents are going to blame them for it when they return the following day.
