10 Things You Didn’t Know about “Full Metal Jacket”

14 September 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

It’s one of the more disturbing films based around the idea of going to war since it starts in boot camp and shows the absolute horrors that can befall an enlisted man before he ever sets foot on the battlefield. Full Metal Jacket was one of those films you actually cringed at when you watched it because you couldn’t imagine that someone could possibly be so cruel to another human being. Then you remember that it’s all in preparation for war and you still cringe because the guys doing the training seem like they’re just as bad as the enemy.

Tiff Reveals First Slate of 2017 Titles, Including ‘The Shape of Water,’ ‘Downsizing,’ and ‘Call Me By Your Name’

25 July 2017 7:33 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival still is over a month from kicking off, but the starry annual event is pulling out zero stops when it comes to its first official slate announcement. The festival will close out with Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledo’s “C’est la vie!,” and the Special Presentations section will open with Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, “Lady Bird,” and close with Amr Salama’s “Sheikh Jackson.”

Today’s first glimpse of this year’s programing include a slew of 2017’s most anticipated features, including Guillermo del Toro’s adult fairy tale “The Shape of Water,” Alexander Payne’s Matt Damon-starring comedy “Downsizing,” Darren Aronofsky’s secretive “mother!,” George Clooney’s reportedly uber-violent “Suburbicon,” and Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

And that is just the tip of a very big iceberg, one that today includes the announcement of both Gala and Special Presentations titles. »

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: In honor of Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk,” what is the best war movie ever made?

Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam war masterpiece “Full Metal Jacket” will open this year’s HollyShorts Film Festival, care of an opening night celebration on August 10. The opening night festivities will coincide with the iconic feature’s thirtieth anniversary — the film first bowed back in June of 1987 — and star Matthew Modine will be on hand to participate in a special post-screening Q&A.

Kubrick’s instant classic depiction of Vietnam — and really, war in general — was based on Gutav Hasford’s novel “The Short-Timers,” which Kubrick sparked to after seeking material for a war film for years. The film stars Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D’Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey, Dorian Harewood, Arliss Howard, Kevyn Major Howard, and Ed O’Ross and follows a motley crew of Marines as they train for and eventually go to battle in Vietnam. The film was a lauded success, and earned an Oscar nod for Best Adapted Screenplay. »

Posterized July 2017: ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘A Ghost Story,’ ‘Atomic Blonde,’ and More

2 July 2017 8:01 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

For being a summer month, July only having two sequels (yes, An Inconvenient Sequel in limited release on the 28th counts) and one reboot is kind of an astonishing realization.

It’s a tough market for originality out there, but maybe we’re turning a corner. A24 is bringing its niche auteurs to wide release, big studios like Warner Bros. are affording A-listers the room for passion projects, and no matter how misguided The Emoji Movie (July 28) seems, the reality of it not having a number after its »
