Review: Lovely Molly

Lovely Molly

Stars: Gretchen Lodge, Johnny Lewis, Alexandra Holden | Written by Eduardo Sanchez, Jamie Nash | Directed by Eduardo Sanchez

Known predominantly for the massive hit that was The Blair Witch Project (one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time no less), Eduardo Sanchez returns with what is his fourth directorial effort since that films groundbreaking debut and his best movie yet. Now I’ll admit I wasn’t a huge fan of Blair Witch, I enjoyed it for what it was but the obnoxious cast always put me off, however Sanchez’s 2006 directorial follow-up Altered was a stroke of genius that undeservedly shoved out as a direct to DVD release. But now he’s back, surpassing all expectations with Lovely Molly.

The film starts off innocently enough, with the titular Molly (Lodge) and her newlywed husband Tim (Lewis) moving into the old family homestead to start their married life together. »

Lyne Gets Money For Taking "Back Roads"

21 May 2012 8:09 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Adrian Lyne's long-gestating film adaptation of Tawni O’Dell's novel "Back Roads" has found financing says The Hollywood Reporter.

Set in Pennsylvania’s mining country, the story follows a 20-year-old man who has to care for his three sisters after his mother is convicted of killing his abusive father.

He commences an affair with a married mother of two and becomes the prime suspect in a murder. Andrew Garfield was previously attached to star but that fell apart a while back due to scheduling issues.

Rcr Media Group is backing the steamy thriller which "Fatal Attraction" and "Indecent Proposal" helmer Lyne will direct, marking his first film since 2002's "Unfaithful". Lyne's been attached to numerous projects over the years including "Two Minutes to Midnight," "Prince of Thieves", and last month he was linked to John Grisham's legal thriller "The Associate". »

Michael Douglas To Front Cancer Awareness Campaign

16 May 2012 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Michael Douglas has teamed up with the Oral Cancer Foundation in America to raise awareness of the deadly disease.

The Fatal Attraction star spent six months fighting throat cancer in 2010, undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.

He was given the all-clear last year and has now signed up to appear in a public service announcement (PSA) for the Oral Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organisation set up to help those struck down with the disease.

In the PSA, which will debut in June, Douglas urges Americans to undergo annual screenings for oral cancer.

The charity's founder, Brian Hill, says, "The Foundation is indebted to Michael Douglas for partnering with us in the battle against oral cancer. Michael is a highly visible, well known actor, and a consummate professional.

"Those qualities, when coupled with his personal cancer experience, yield a respected voice to this fight. His willingness right from the beginning of his journey, to openly talk about his difficult personal experience with oral cancer on TV and in print, has certainly created awareness in the public of a cancer too few have even heard of." »

The Complex Presents: The Ten Most Dangerous Broads In Film

18 April 2012 10:18 AM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

It’s Ladies’ Night at the Complex.

We’ve covered a pretty broad spectrum of shady characters over the past few months around here, but with Mother’s Day coming up in a few weeks, we felt it entirely appropriate to tip our collective hats to all the wonderful women that keep us under a thin layer of sweat.  Presenting the ten meanest, craziest, and most scandalous chicks to ever set the screen on fire.

Alert: Spoilers abound.

10. Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway, Mommie Dearest, 1981)

Mean broads aren’t all fictional.  Believe it or not, there are real live firebreathing witches that walk the very terra firma upon which you stand.  So tread lightly, my friend.

Joan Crawford’s reputation as a mean old bag was no secret in 1981 when Mommie Dearest hit the screen.  However, it took Faye Dunaway channeling her maniacal soul to really get the message across to the movie-going public. »

'Cape Fear' 50th Anniversary: Robert Mitchum's Max Cady Fathers Modern Movie Villainy

18 April 2012 4:57 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

For some reason, Robert Mitchum's Max Cady in the original "Cape Fear" lands at only No. 28 on the AFI's list of the top 50 on-screen villains of all time. (That's just one notch above Mitchum's Rev. Harry Powell in "Night of the Hunter," a similarly terrifying killer, the one with "L-o-v-e" and "H-a-t-e" tattooed on his knuckles.) Really, Mitchum's Cady ought to be much higher up. After all, there are plenty of stalkers and murderers on the list, but how many also imbue their characters with such a perverse air of sexual menace? Only a handful: Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper) in "Blue Velvet," Noah Cross (John Huston) in "Chinatown," Alex De Large (Malcolm McDowell) in "A Clockwork Orange," and Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) in "Psycho." "Psycho" was clearly a touchstone for "Cape Fear," which marks its 50th anniversary this month. Besides a villain with a dark sexual history and twisted tastes, »

The John Grisham Renaissance Continues: Adrian Lyne To Direct 'The Associate'

13 April 2012 6:25 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It seems that Hollywood is ready to get back into the John Grisham business. Earlier this week, Mark Wahlberg became attached to produce and star in New Regency's adaptation of "The Partner," and now director Adrian Lyne ("Flashdance," "Fatal Attraction") may come out of hybernation to helm Paramount's adaptation of Grisham's 2009 novel "The Associate."

It's been ten years since Lyne has worked on a studio film, last directing the 2002 thriller "Unfaithful," but Variety says that Lyne is now in talks to direct "The Associate," which has been laying dormant for some time. William Monahan ("The Departed") wrote the initial draft of the script, but Paramount had a difficult time setting the budget, which made Shia Labeouf and possible director Tony Scott walk away from the project (they were looking at it back in 2010). The report doesn't say what the budget might have been, but says that Paramount has settled on a $25-30 pricetag, »

Adrian Lyne In Talks For "Associate"

12 April 2012 8:49 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Adrian Lyne ("Fatal Attraction," "Unfaithful") is in talks to direct the adaptation of John Grisham's legal thriller "The Associate" at Paramount Pictures reports Variety.

The story follows a student who's about to graduate from Yale Law School when he's manipulated into accepting a job at a prestige law firm and given privileged information about a multibillion-dollar lawsuit.

William Monahan penned the original draft adaptation back when Shia Labeouf and director Tony Scott were attached. That version fell through due to monetary issues.

The new version has set a $25-30 million budget and the studio is now looking for its star and are keen to land new Spider-Man Andrew Garfield. Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce. »

Adrian Lyne May Return With John Grisham Adaptation ‘The Associate’; Andrew Garfield Wanted for Lead

12 April 2012 7:29 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Coming right after Mark Wahlberg‘s multi-hyphenated interest in The Partner, Variety has me thinking John Grisham‘s suddenly back in style. According to them, Adrian Lyne (Jacob’s Ladder, Fatal Attraction) may end his nearly ten-year retirement by adapting his novel, The Associate, with a script by William Monahan there to guide him along.

I could make a joke about the story centering on a lawyer, but we’re not going to poke fun at Michael Bay for making expensive action films, either. (Actually…) As it were, The Associate tells the story of “a recent Yale grad coerced into taking a job with a prestige firm after he’s given information about a multi-billion-dollar case.” When we first reported on the film, back in August of 2010, Shia Labeouf and Tony Scott were the prospective star and director, respectively, and the story was said to follow “a young lawyer thrust »

7 Toughest Comebacks in Crime Film

Crime heroes and villains got it rough. They’re usually up to the gills in trouble and their genre, unlike horror, doesn’t smile on its bad-asses soaking up too many bullets.

A fortunate – or unfortunate, if you’re a “the grave’s half empty” kind of person – few manage some superhuman comebacks. Whether by the power of a psychotic episode, sheer grit or timely medical attention, these crime film characters practically pull off an Easter miracle.

Here’s our list of the grittiest mooks who managed the 7 Toughest Comebacks in Crime Film.

7. Fatal Attraction: Alex Forrest

We start our list off with a superficial softie – the sensuous and psychotic mistress, Alex Forrest. Fatal Attraction pits Alex (Glenn Close) against Michael Douglas and the family he shatters with his adultery. The whole film plays as an Academy Award-winning PSA against sleeping around. Then it »

Glenn Close: 'Attention should be paid'

6 April 2012 1:44 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Glenn Close's new film about a cross-dressing butler has been 30 years in the making. Here she explains why the story of Albert Nobbs means so much to her

There is no crackle on the line to Glenn Close. No echo or delay. No hiss or interference. "Yes! I can hear you! I can hear you fine!" She sounds almost alarmingly near, sat in her flat on Central Park West, New York. Not boomy, exactly, but big on crisp diction (it was she they called to dub Andie MacDowell's duff twangs on Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes). "It's a little bit of a chilly day here, but all the blossoms are out, all the trees are blooming. It's raining there? Oh dear."

Close is all about the good connection. On Lively Licks, the dog blog she co-authors with her terriers Jake and Bill (they share »

Jeff Bridges or Michael Douglas Sought To Play A 'Dirty Grandpa'

28 March 2012 7:36 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Over the course of cinema history, there’s been a long lineage of characters with whom audiences fall in love, even though they’re of the more unscrupulous variety. Whether they’re leading a ragtag group of baseball underdogs like Walter Matthau did as Coach Buttermaker in “The Bad News Bears” or Billy Bob Thornton as Willie spreading yuletide cheer in the like-minded “Bad Santa” – these characters continue to work onscreen despite their flaws.

Vulture reports that Universal may look to be providing another character who could potentially enter that very pantheon by extending an offer to Jeff Bridges, with Michael Douglas as a second option, to take a role in “Dirty Grandpa.” Well the title pretty much says it all with this one, and with “Bad Santa 2” scribe John Phillips on board, we pretty much get the gist of where this is going. “Dirty Grandpa” will follow an »

But here at NextMovie, we're all about the bad girls. We love a lady who isn't afraid to embrace her nasty side in order to get what she wants.

In honor of "Mirror Mirror" and its fairest (evil) queen of all, we've gathered up the coolest and cruelest women to grace the silver screen. We're a little worried about ranking them, because if there's one thing we know about these vicious villainesses, it's that they don't like competition. But we did. Now, you read. We'll run.

Woody Harrelson’s 9 Best Movie Roles

21 March 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

For over 25 years, Woody Harrelson has entertained us with a wide array of characters ranging from psychopaths to lovable losers. This year alone we've seen him in two very different parts: a wickedly corrupt L.A. cop in "Rampart" and a Republican party strategist in "Game Change." His latest role -- sure to be one of his more colorful -- is Haymitch Abernathy, the drunken mentor of Katniss in "The Hunger Games."

To celebrate his versatility, we look back at Harrelson’s nine best performances in what has become an impressive career.

9. 'A Scanner Darkly' (2006)

"The Hunger Games" isn’t the first time Harrelson has worked with existing material. In Richard Linklater’s adaptation of the classic Philip K. Dick sci-fi thriller, Harrelson plays Ernie Luckman, the mellow yet extremely paranoid member of a group of drug addicts that have an undercover cop in their midst. Oscars round-up with videos, gallery: The Artist is the big winner, Hugo is the big surprise

27 February 2012 4:10 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Silent film The Artist made the most noise at the Oscars when it scooped five Academy Awards - but Martin Scorsese's Hugo emerged as the big surprise of the night when it also landed five trophies.

As expected, The Artist was named Best Picture, director Michel Hazanavicius was Best Director and its star Jean Dujardin won Best Actor, beating his fellow nominees George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman and Demian Bichir. The black-and-white film also won in the costume design and music (original score) categories.

Although The Artist had dominated Twitter buzz as the most talked-about film on the social networking site in the run-up to the ceremony, it was Midnight in Paris that most Twitter users had been willing to win the Best Picture accolade. In the end, Midnight in Paris won only the original screenplay award.

Hugo, which was Scorsese's first foray into the 3D trend, took the trophies for art direction, »

Meryl Streep Vs. Glenn Close

24 February 2012 10:00 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

There are five contenders for the 2012 Academy Award for Best Actress, but only two that could ever be mistaken for one another: Glenn Close and Meryl Streep. And while the roles that they play -- Close for a woman disguised as a man in "Albert Nobbs" and Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady" -- are as different as servants and their masters, the two actresses have much in common.

The last time they went head to head was in 1989, with Streep for the baby-killing drama "A Cry in the Dark" and Close for her delicious role as Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil in "Dangerous Liaisons." (Neither won. That honor went to Jodie Foster for "The Accused.")

A similar face-off had occurred just the year before, when Close and Streep were nominated for "Fatal Attraction" and "Ironweed," respectively; but the Oscar went to Cher, for "Moonstruck."
