Several people are hunted by a cruel serial killer who kills his victims in their dreams. While the survivors are trying to find the reason for being chosen, the murderer won't lose any chance to kill them as soon as they fall asleep.
Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members, a traffic reporter, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.
There is panic throughout the nation as the dead suddenly come back to life. The film follows a group of characters who barricade themselves in an old farmhouse in an attempt to remain safe from these bloodthirsty, flesh-eating monsters.
Ashley Williams travels to a secluded cabin in the woods with his girlfriend Linda where they find a tape recording of a professor and a book of evil. This unleashes a bunch of evil spirits that constantly terrorize Ash. Meanwhile a journalist comes to the area to study the book of evil. Ash and her end up having to survive this swarm of evil until morning comes.
Many scenes were deleted from the movie and according to official reports, all of them and original version of the movie are lost. Some of these scenes are;
Henrietta is in her rocking chair while the professor reads the incantations when she rocks into the light revealing her demonic eyes
Linda's severed head throws up black bile on Ash when it's trapped in the vice (which is why black slime suddenly appears around her mouth in the final scene)
Linda's severed head puts its long snake-like tongue into Ash's mouth when he's sitting in the rocking chair
alternate longer take of the "blood flood" with green and yellow blood
after hitting the possessed Ed with the ax the scene continues as a "half-headed" Ed runs after them and eventually is chopped to pieces and body parts flop on the floor
possessed Ash eating a squirrel as he runs after Annie
Ash's demonic face morphing into normal after he takes his dead girlfriend's necklace...
Fans of the movie did manage to find very rare 36 minutes long workprint which only has very early versions of opening and ending scenes with only few extra shots, and old rare TV version of the movie with many alternate and extended scenes but unfortunately even this version doesn't includes all the famous deleted scenes. In the beginning of the movie Ash's shirt is un-tucked when he walks over to the table with the tape recorder, then after listening to it when he walks into the room to find Linda his shirt is tucked into his pants. See more »
... in the evil dead series. From the very beginning I couldn't stop smiling... every time I saw Bruce Campbell i laughed and every time there was a fight I chuckled. It is an extremely fun movie with a no mercy attitude. Sam Raimi perfects his shaky cam shots and first persons and makes for the most enjoyable experience in a long time. The plot is sturdy (identical to Evil Dead) and the technology is painful (purposefully). The movie moves leisurely from event to event. The supporting cast are stupid and bring more trouble to the film (a much needed element) and the best part is, the carnage starts 5 minutes into the movie. A no-think great movie, possibly the best movie the horror genre has turned out in the last 20 years.
