With the acclaimed mini-series The Pacific released this year, Santosh Sandhu presents an updated look at the influence of World War II on filmmaker Steven Spielberg's body of work...
Steven Spielberg’s father was a pilot in World War II and his stories formed a strong part in his son’s upbringing. Spielberg began making movies at the age of 15 and even at this young age his films Fighter Squad (1959) and Escape to Nowhere (1962) used World War II as a backdrop. It seemed inevitable that when Spielberg became a major Hollywood player he would make films about this war. Despite coming from the Vietnam generation, Spielberg has constantly revisited World War II throughout his career.
Having suffered anti-Semitism as a teenager, Spielberg sympathised with the civil rights movement but never felt comfortable with his own generation. He had little time for the counter-cultural movement of the late 1960s. With regard to filmmaking, »

F. Scott Fitzgerald may have said that there were no second acts in American lives, but that presumably didn't include the Welsh-born Christian Bale, whose career to date seems to have been structured by Robert McKee. Beginning as a child star in Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun," and working consistently into his teens in such films as "Newsies" and "Swing Kids," the actor firmly moved into the adult phase of his career with his iconic performance in "American Psycho." That, in turn, saw him win the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in Christopher Nolan's revival "Batman Begins," which has firmly… »

I'm just going to keep using this one photo I concocted below until people stop with the Hailee Steinfeld is a supporting actress in True Grit meme. I've even seen her so labelled In Reviews that have nothing to do with Oscars. Oscar culture has truly distorted all concepts of narrative in our modern society. I realize that I'm the lone ornery voice of dissent but, so what? I'm demonstrating my own true grit; Hailee would be proud of me... well, except for the part where I wouldn't nominate her.
But, the ageism and sexism of movie awards is really getting to me this year, sorry.
Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), the captain of True Grit's ship. Fact: No teenage boy who was leading a picture like True Grit (just imagine the gender reversed) would ever win any awards beyond "breakthrough." Remember when Leonardo DiCaprio won all those statues for »

Opens: March 23rd 2011
Cast: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence
Director: Jodie Foster
Summary: A depressed toy company CEO with a failed marriage starts to wear a beaver puppet on his hand as a form of therapy, much to the initial bemusement of his family. He soon begins talking only through the character.
Analysis: This time last year, excitement was quietly brewing for "The Beaver". Gibson's drunken tirade a few years before hand wasn't forgotten, but enough time had passed that this looked to be the year of a potential comeback for the actor.
The thriller remake "Edge of Darkness" and this were his first on screen roles in ten years, 'Beaver' is also his "Maverick" co-star Foster's return to the director's chair fifteen years after her last feature. The script topped the 2008 Black List and scored rave reviews for its blend of sophisticated humor and sad pathos, »

We’ve been asking you all week to vote for your Oscar picks from the year 1999, twelve years on as we retrospectively take a look back at all the Academy Award ceremonies in the 1990′s to see if time has been kind to the winners and losers.
28 of you voted, a little less than the amount who voted last time (which I think is to do with the problems with the form as we had a few complaints, I will try and fix this for next time) including a handful of Owf writers, who have collectively, like Dr. Sam Beckett in Quantum Leap, gone back in time to ‘put things right, that once went wrong’.
The number in brackets is the amount of points that film/actor/director gained (that system is explained here). Let’s take a look at the winners, shall we?

Thanks to Mondo, it seems like we're posting really cool Star Wars posters [1] almost every other day here on /Film. Actually, it's every week and that series is almost over. But the Star Wars posters keep on coming! This latest batch, however, aren't exactly Star Wars posters. They just use Star Wars as the basis for posters for some other films like Empire of the Sun, Cool Hand Luke, The Princess Bride, Rebel Without a Cause and Empire Records. Artist Matthew Ranzetta took a simple idea and really did an awesome job with it. You see two of them above, check out the rest after the jump. Click on each photo for the bigger version. Read more about them over on Ranzetta's official website [2], and if you'd like to buy any of these as a print or t-shirt, click here [3]. Actors can be a delicate breed. Ruffle their feathers and some are liable to stomp off to their trailer for the rest of the day.
Then there are actors like Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. These guys don’t get “miffed.” They get raged. Step on their lines and the police might have to be called. And well, that’s part of the reason we love them.
With the pair co-starring in the new film “The Fighter,” the levels of testosterone on set must have reached Ufc levels — it’s a wonder Amy Adams didn’t grow a beard. These rugged fellas don’t seem like the types to shy away from a fight. So why not pit them against each other in a totally scientifically valid comparison that will decide, once and for all, objectively, who’s best?

Ho Ho Ho! Welcome to the Holiday Edition of Afterelton's Music Roundup. This holiday season we've been blessed with fresh albums by artists who had yet to venture into the holiday album arena including Annie Lennox, Indigo Girls, and the B-52's Fred Schneider. Like a gift at a Pink Elephant party, we've also been given second attempt albums by those artists who should probably just stick to their original (I'm talking to you Mariah!).
With everyone from Train to The Killers to Coldplay churning out holiday hits at the last minute, there's much to discuss. On the flip side, we'll pick back up with new non-holiday material (Cee Lo Green, Adam Lambert, Joe McElderry and Real Housewives of Atlanta's Kandi Burrus) all worth a listen, so let's get started.
Holiday Highlights

Just recently we featured a small batch of Star Wars crossover posters bringing some of the epic trilogy's signature style to films of the past like Cool Hand Luke and Empire of the Sun. Now we have something that not only features some cool Star Wars artwork, but also aims to teach kids their alphabet in the coolest way possible while helping to benefit the future of another future fan of the holy trilogy. Graphic designer Brandon Peat (a friend of a friend) and his pregnant wife Emma wanted to figure out a creative way to decorate their baby's room but with a geeky twist. The result was A is for Ackbar, featuring a myriad of Star Wars characters and the ABC's. Here are just some of the assorted prints from A is for Ackbar: Dubbed as "an alphabet from a galaxy far, far away," the prints (which have been »

If Christian Bale wins an Academy Award next year—and his odds are good—the first person he should thank is his daughter. It was at an event for her school that Bale ran into Mark Wahlberg, whose daughter is a fellow student. Wahlberg had spent years developing a movie called "The Fighter," which tells the true story of boxer "Irish" Micky Ward and his offbeat, often overbearing family. Wahlberg knew he needed the perfect actor to portray Ward's half-brother and trainer, Dickie Eklund, a once-great pugilist who had lost his career to a crippling addiction to crack. "The first time I saw Christian," Wahlberg recalls of their chance encounter, "I was like, 'Holy fuck. I've figured it out.' " Before long, Wahlberg and Bale were spending time in the town of Lowell, Mass., where Ward and Eklund still live, learning about the brothers' lives and getting to know the family. »

Christian Bale says people stereotype him as an "idiot" actor. The actor of "The Fighter" actor loves to experience different cultures when he is filming in locations around the world but insists it is hard for him to have a normal experience because of the misconceptions people have about him and his Hollywood peers.
Asked what he would do if he wasn't an actor, Christian told Esquire magazine, "I think I probably would have tried to experience my own stories in the way my father did, the sort of travel, the randomness of life, educating himself through experiences."
"I think I get that partially through acting, but you have to make an effort to be in an unprotected environment because everyone thinks you're a completely incapable idiot who couldn't possibly brush his teeth without an assistant. You have to make an effort in order to be able to actually experience the country that you're in. »

Glen salutes the work of John Williams, and its enormous contribution to the success of director Steven Spielberg’s pictures...
A prominent feature of the recent Iconic Movie Themes article we ran on this site a while back, John Williams is one of the most respected and prolific composers working today. He has also received more Oscar nominations than any other individual, with over 40 nominations and five wins.
With that kind of back catalogue, it would do the man a great disservice to try to condense his work into a single article. So this is one of several planned pieces celebrating his work, and will be the first part of my look at his long working relationship with Steven Spielberg, and the feature films they have collaborated on.
This is the score that marked the start of Williams’ long collaboration with Spielberg, and set the foundations for »

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of spending about 45-minutes on the telephone with Michelle Williams, who is not only one of America’s finest actresses — and, at 30, will probably remain one of them for decades to come — but who is also a deeply intelligent woman; a devoted single mother; and a real survivor. (She’s also not bad on the eyes!)
Williams became a star at the tender age of 17 on the hit TV show “Dawson’s Creek” (1998-2003) — I remember when it happened because I’m about the same age as her and often tuned in. She proved that she had the acting chops to match her looks in a number of early films, but especially “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), for which she received a best supporting actress Oscar nod. She attracted the interest of the tabloids when she first began dating her “Brokeback” co-star Heath Ledger, with whom she would eventually have a daughter, »

The robots are coming! I like to pretend that I'm okay with the evolution of Steven Spielberg into a very solid, respectable, smart and heartfelt grown-up filmmaking. I can appreciate the nuance and the craft of films like "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan" and "Catch Me If You Can." But in those quiet moments, when I'm honest with myself, I confess that I would trade every "grown-up" movie he's ever made including my beloved "Empire Of The Sun" if it meant I got another piece of pure popcorn as perfect as "Raiders Of The Lost Ark." And now, damn it, »

Legendary filmmaker suggested Matt Reeves listen to child actors.

Kodi Smit-McPhee in "Let Me In"

There is a moment in the new horror flick "Let Me In" when a local policeman goes in search of a young girl named Abby, who he believes is connected to a series of grisly murders. As he walks into her apartment, he steps on one of the toys that she and her friend Owen had been playing with moments before.
It's a small yet redolent moment: The cop has missed her for now, this young girl with a horrifying secret whom the audience has come to care about so deeply. It turns out the moment was neither part of the shooting script nor one of director Matt Reeves' ideas. It sprung from the mind of then-13-year-old Kodi Smit-McPhee, who plays Owen. »
