‘Dear White People’ Star Tyler James Williams Talks Afros and Chris Rock

9 October 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

He started by playing the young Chris Rock in “Everybody Hates Chris,” and Tyler James Williams is now earning laughs sprouting a giant Afro in the hit Sundance satire “Dear White People.” He’s also rumored to be among the new cast of “The Walking Dead,” premiering Oct. 12 on AMC, though he remains coy about details.

What appealed to you about “Dear White People”?

When it hit my desk, I thought, “This is something that can not only possibly define my career, but define a generation.”

I hear getting the Afro just right was an ongoing saga?

It was an ordeal. At one point, we tried a weave that I was supposed to keep in through production. At five o’clock one morning, I called and said, “Get this out of my hair or I’ll take it out myself!” They couldn’t get anyone there fast enough and I »

Film Review: ‘The Fluffy Movie’

25 July 2014 6:17 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Even after the 100-pound weight loss that provides much of the fodder for his first theatrical concert film, Mexican-American comedian Gabriel Iglesias cuts the contented, spherical figure of a well-fed house cat — one possible interpretation of his nickname, Fluffy. But Iglesias (who played the club DJ in “Magic Mike”) is the one who has the audience eating out of his hand for most of “The Fluffy Movie,” an enjoyable if never electrifying record of his Unity Through Laughter stand-up tour. One of the rare concert films to earn a full-scale cinema release in the VOD era, the Open Road release will test whether Fluffy’s formidable fan base (including 6 million Facebook followers) can translate into box-office numbers anywhere near those of Kevin Hart (whose two recent concert pics grossed a combined $40 million). Those who do turn out will surely be pleased, as will a few Fluffy virgins (like this reviewer) too. »

Interview: Comedian Gabriel Iglesias For ‘The Fluffy Movie’

24 July 2014 8:38 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – One the hottest, most creative and “fluffiest” stand-up comics working today is Gabriel Iglesias. The comedian riffs on the circumstances of his own life, as he deals with his adventures in the comedy world. He has put that all together in a new stand-up concert film, appropriately entitled “The Fluffy Movie.”

Iglesias was born in San Diego, but grew up in Long Beach, California. After high school, he worked for a mobile phone company while doing stand-up comedy on the side. When he was 21 years old, he turned to stand-up full time. He worked his way up and gained cult-like popularity with routines that include his amazing ability to mimic voices and sound effects. He gained the nickname “Fluffy” from his act, in which he described the levels of “fatness” (Fluffy was right before, “daaaaamn” and “hell, no”). The comic has recently dropped 100 pounds, and is primed to hit the big screen. »

WWE’s Vince McMahon: ‘We Were a Little Disappointed’ With NBCU Deal

19 May 2014 9:53 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Wall Street wasn’t impressed last week with WWE’s new multiyear licensing deal with NBCUniversal to keep its popular shows “Raw” and “SmackDown” on USA Network and Syfy. Neither was WWE chairman Vince McMahon.

“We were a little disappointed with our NBCU deal,” McMahon said during his first conference call with analysts to discuss the deal on Monday. “Whether we failed or not, I’m not certain.”

The call took place several days after investors punished WWE’s stock, lowering it 43% on Friday — dropping it $8.66 to $11.27 – after the NBCU deal was announced Thursday. McMahon is estimated to have lost $357 million himself on the single-day stock sell-off.

Specific financial terms of the NBCU deal have not yet been revealed, but analysts had expected WWE to at least double its licensing fees as live event programming is commanding not only strong ratings but interest from advertisers. WWE earned around $106 million of »

Pumping Iron and the birth of the 80s action hero

18 March 2014 6:59 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Feature Ryan Lambie 19 Mar 2014 - 06:21

The 1977 docu-drama Pumping Iron launched Schwarzenegger's career, and led to an era of fitness obsession and action heroes, Ryan writes...

In February 1976, the Whitney Museum in New York played host to a highly unusual exhibit: Arnold Schwarzenegger, clad in little more than a tiny pair of brown briefs, posing like a Greek statue on a rotating platform. Around him, some of the Manhattan art scene's most famous critics sat and pontificated.

Called Articulate Muscle: The Male Body In Art, the exhibition included two fellow Mr Universe bodybuilders, Frank Zane and Ed Corney, plus a panel of artists and historians, who discussed the notion of "the body itself as an art medium". The event was inspired and organised by Charles Gaines, a former weight lifter and author of the book Pumping Iron, a candid and in-depth account of bodybuilding with photographs by George Butler.

Originally expected to attract around 300 visitors, »

WWE: 5 Ways To Get Alexander Rusev Over In 2014

27 February 2014 10:07 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

YouTube

Alexander Rusev, the Bulgarian Brute. WWE’s latest Nxt call-up made a big impression at the Royal Rumble, and since then he has been biding his time, appearing in vignettes on Raw and Smackdown before he makes his television debut. The time for plotting is now for the creative department, as they have basically a blank slate heel to build in this new year. And I am so excited for this!!

In 2014, the WWE is somewhat lacking in sizable, fearsome monsters. The likes of Kane and Brock Lesnar have had their time in the past and are fully established as such, so there’s no point in placing them in midcard feuds. Batista is ridiculously out of shape, Roman Reigns seems destined for a face turn, so there is a niche that needs to be filled, which Alexander Rusev can easily do.

Granted, he’s not the tallest in the world at only 6 foot, »

WWE Network: A First Look (Early Thoughts)

26 February 2014 8:25 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

The time has come folks. The WWE has finally launched the WWE Network in the United States (the rest of the World to follow eventually) and I had a chance to spend the last couple of days delving into the service.

I’ll begin by saying that my review and look at the service is based on my use of it on PS3 and Laptop Computer. The launch, if you are one who follows the news on these matters, was a small disaster, with many people being unable to access the correct pages in order to sign up, and this issue went on for the first day of the launch. Since then, due to the slowing down of traffic attempting to sign up, this issue has cleared up, but that doesn’t mean that the WWE Network has been all smooth sailing.

Currently we are three days into the service »

WWE Raw: What To Expect When Batista Returns Tonight

20 January 2014 6:20 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

The time has finally arrived. Tonight on Raw ‘The Animal’ is unleashed.

Dave Batista’s return to a WWE ring is one loaded with potential. In an era bereft of legitimate main event draws, Batista is a significant boost to the company. He was the hottest star in the whole WWE during his 2005 main event run, continuing to be a franchise player for the years afterward. When it comes to spiking ratings, selling PPVs, drawing crowds and retailing merchandise he is a considerable asset – and that money he brings in is ultimately good for everyone involved with WWE.

Batista’s return tonight on Raw will be the first time we have seen him in WWE since 2010. He is expected to be around for the next two years, possibly with some time off over the summer. The WWE have big plans for Batista in the run up to Wrestlemania 30, with some »
