The film is set in a house occupied by a collection of social misfits. The main storyline is that of a strange musician's relationship with a girl, their drug use and his band. These events are surrounded by a chaotic myriad of sub-plots. A homicidal chainsaw maniac's lust for his machine and a T.V station's offer of money in return for a piece of the Skylab satellite that has fallen to earth are just two. The film is composed of small fragments in the lives of its inhabitants, each following onto the next, sometimes overlapping and ending in tragedy. Written by

This film is based on real life and several of the people the characters are based upon appear in the movie as extras. At the car flip-over party, the runaway girl sits on the lap of the real Sam, Michael Hutchence's character. The real Tim, filmmaker Richard Lowenstein, is seen in a blue and white striped shirt and wearing a head scarf at the same party. The real little guy in the trench coat appears outside the restroom where the movie little guy in a trench coat is shooting up. Chuck plays himself; that is the real Chuck Meo on screen. The real Sam can also be seen at the club, watching the woman doing the Nick Cave cover. See more
At one point, a cover for the Marvel Comics title "The Thing" is seen tacked up on the notice board. That series wasn't published until 1983, and the specific issue cover seen was published in 1985 - several years after the events of the movie. See more
