Farewell, Ee Wednesdays! Watch Mr Dresden's best Orange pitch adverts

25 February 2015 5:28 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

After treating cinema fans for more than a decade, Ee's 2-for-1 ticket offer is coming to an end today (February 25). We'll certainly miss breaking up the week with a cut-price cinema visit, and the end of the promotion has made us all nostalgic about the classic Orange Wednesdays ads that started it all off.

Dubbed 'Orange Gold Spots', they starred Brennan Brown and Steve Furst as two clueless film execs listening to pitches from some of Hollywood's finest. Brilliantly lampooning the bean counter thinking of studio suits and the fragile creative egos of A-listers, the likes of Patrick Swayze, Macaulay Culkin and Carrie Fisher all stepped up to offer their increasingly compromised film pitches:

1. A Clockwork Orange

This early offering sought to capture that creative moment when the lightbulb flicks on... unfortunately Brown's dim-witted exec can't quite grasp what's dangling right in front of him. Stanley Kubrick would be livid. »

Campanario, Kenny Ortega, ‘Violetta’ Creators Team for ‘Bandolero’ (Exclusive)

Having choreographed “Dirty Dancing” and directed Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” and “HIStory” world tours and Disney Channel’s record-busting “High School Musicals,” Kenny Ortega looks set to see his career take another turn as he teams with “Violetta” creators Solange Keoleyan and Sebastian Parrotta to originate “Bandolero,” a new Spanish-language musical TV series.

Also written by Keoleyan and Parrotta, whose “Violetta” has proved a mega-franchise TV series for Disney Channel, “Bandolero” is set up at Los Angeles’ Campanario Entertainment, producers of Telemundo’s flagship Spanish telenovela “Camelia La Texana.”

In development, “Bandolero” marks the first major Spanish-language production for Ortega, whose grandparents were from Spain.

A “music-dance-parkour driven dramatic format about contemporary kids who are art lovers,” in Ortega’s words, the TV series is billed as a story of forbidden love and lofty musical dreams that slowly reveals the origins of powerful Hispanic superhero Bandolero.

Actress and singer Alexandra Socha has been upped to a series regular on Amazon’s ’80s-set comedy from Steven Soderbergh, “Red Oaks,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Socha, who’s had recurring arcs on “Royal Pains,” “The Big C” and “Damages” and replaced Lea Michele in “Spring Awakening’s” original Broadway production in 2008, was a guest star in the pilot for Amazon Studios, which premiered last year on Amazon Prime Instant Video. The full series is set to bow later this year.

The coming-of-age series, set in suburban New Jersey in the mid-’80s, follows college student David Myers (Craig Roberts), working the summer as an assistant tennis pro at the Red Oaks Country Club, during the last hurrah before his adult life begins. Paul Reiser (“Mad About You”) and Jennifer Grey (“Dirty Dancing”) also star.

Socha will continue her role as Skye in the series.

See kids, if you work hard, one day you can get your own talk show and convince all of your childhood heroes to recreate all of your absolute favorite things, from getting to perform a duet from Dirty Dancing, to singing “Old Man” with Neil Young, and to starring in your own reunion of Saved By the Bell. Of course, Jimmy got Mark-Paul Gosselaar to revive his role as Zack Morris once before, but this one paired him with Mario Lopez, Tiffani-Amber ThiessenElizabeth Berkley, and Dennis Haskins in the Internet’s biggest act of fan service in a while. Honestly though the best moment may have been that Jimmy is still kicking himself for realizing he could’ve dated Nicole Kidman.

What?! No Dustin Diamond? I can’t possibly imagine why.

Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart and Jimmy Fallon Should’ve Performed at Super Bowl Xlix Halftime

2 February 2015 6:30 AM, PST | VH1.com | See recent VH1.com news »

Jimmy Fallon‘s lip sync battle on the special post-Super Bowl Xlix edition of The Tonight Show put Katy Perry‘s unsurprisingly tacky halftime performance to shame. No sharks were harmed in the process of making these performances epic.

Will Ferrell channeled his inner Beyonce with a rendition of “Drunk In Love,” people. This was obviously perfect in so many ways but mostly because we were missing Queen Bey’s performance from last year terribly last night. #NeverForget. Jimmy got his Kelly Clarkson-inspired black leather glove on and brought the house down with “Since U Been Gone.” Did we mention Kevin Hart and Will shared a beautiful moment during his performance of “All Of Me”?

It was gorgeous.

After a hint of “Let It Go,” Drew Barrymore came and surprised us in the iconic “(I’ve Had) the Time of My LifeDirty Dancing number with Jimmy.

So many emotions. »

‘Grandma,’ ‘Obvious Child’ Show Willingness to Tackle Abortion Issue

1 February 2015 2:03 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Grandma,” a film about a sassy grandmother trying to help her granddaughter find the money for abortion, comes down firmly for a woman’s right to choose.

By aligning itself with the pro-choice movement, the indie comedy is part of a new string of art house releases taking up the Roe v. Wade mantle at a time when many states and legislators are trying to curb reproductive rights.

Time and again the picture embraces the mantra, her body, her choice.

“I hope it wasn’t a polemic of any kind, but I’m glad it says what it does,” star Lily Tomlin said when questioned about the film’s abortion rights stance during its Sundance premiere Friday.

What’s interesting about “Grandma” is that it follows a decade during which filmmakers seemed to steer clear of the issue of abortion. Films such as “Knocked Up” and “Juno” depicted single women »
