Directed by Wong Jing
For the last little while now, Chinese cinema, Hong Kong-made films in particular, have been beating on the nationalism drum with George Kollias-esque intentensity. It’s not enough for films to just be about loose-cannon cops named after Mexican booze or guys in pajamas fighting monkeys, everything has to be, on an explicit level, about the nation, the people and patriotism.
Screening at Fantasia this year, Wong Jing’s period crime drama The Last Tycoon is a solid addition to that list, setting the story of a Shanghai crime boss against the Japanese attack and occupation of Shanghai in WW2.

5) Die Antwoord “Cookie Thumper”
Directed by Ninja
I couldn’t help but include the latest from Die Antwoord because their videos are so insanely weird and awesome. “Cookie Thumper” is no different, it’s not their best but it’s still good.
4) Jj Doom “Bookhead”
Directed by Steve Powers
Doom gets a new mask this week in highly original video for “Bookhead”, the pair also released a cool ‘the making of’ video too.
3) Wavves “That’s On Me”
Directed by Brandon Dermer
Much like the Die Antwoord video, this isn’t Wavves best but again it’s still fairly entertaining. Watch Cold Steel’s Lynn Thompson smash up various objects in “That’s On Me”.
2) The Postal Service “A Tattered Line of String”
Directed by Ab/CD/CD
Complete with the duo’s recently released 10th anniversary reissue of “Give Up”, The Postal Service has released a new video for »

Noted editor and director David Wu blasted back into Chinese cinemas in 2011 with “Cold Steel”, a wartime sniper thriller that after enjoying success at international festivals finally lands on DVD. Wu has certainly had an interesting career, having worked with John Woo as editor on several of his classics including “A Better Tomorrow”, “Bullet in the Head” and “Hard Boiled”, as well as directing “The Bride with White Hair 2”, before enjoying success in the Us as a director of genre and television fare. For his return to Asia, Wu assembled an interesting cast, headlined by Peter Ho (“Sophie’s Revenge”) and veteran Tony Leung Ka Fai (“Election”), with support from actress Song Jia (“Once Upon a Time in Tibet”), martial artist Yu Rong Guang (“Iron Monkey”), television star Wilson Guo (“Palace”) and John Woo’s daughter Angeles Woo (“Reign of Assassins”). Based on a popular online novel, the film sees Ho as Mu Liangfeng, »
