One of the best Spanish film by José Luis Cuerda and Rafael Azcona
31 May 2013 | by (Spain) – See all my reviews

The bandit "Fendetestas" is one of the characters that scare Galician villagers along the ghost of "Fiz Cotobelo" that roams looking for someone to fulfill a promise by him to go to San Andres De Teixido. Through this argument, José Luis Cuerda shows us this wonderful adaptation of the work of Wenceslao Fernández Flórez.

In this film, the work of José Luis Cuerda and Rafael Azcona is superb, as is the cast with a formidable cast of actors. The film is rich in terms of actors, characters and events. It's a film where many things happen and wonder how well they are all intertwined stories. This is a melancholic and nostalgic film also with a somewhat bitter background and dramatic but full of humor and friendliness. It is not a hard and dry as "Los Santos Inocentes", quite the contrary, it is a nice movie and very entertaining, peppered with doses of humor. The forest is a perfect microcosm, where circulating all kinds of characters and many themes, such as love, hunger, poverty, death, tragedy and nature with the sound of the forest, trees and animals.

"El Bosque Animado" is one of the best Spanish comedies. With unforgettable characters as "Malvís" (The Bandit "Fendetestas"), with a great Alfredo Landa, desperate for his addiction to snuff), "Geraldo" the pitman (Tito Valverde), the attractive "Hermelinda", "Marica Da Fame" and her children, the soul of "Fiz" (Miguel Rellán playing a ghost), the despotic and cynical "Juanita Arruallo" (played by Encarna Paso), "La Moucha", Mr. D'Abondo and visitors of Madrid .. . Even in a rather small role, Luis Ciges as "El Loco De Vos", this provides that bit of absurd humor typical of José Luis Cuerda. The film despite its comedy does not exclude Galician superstitions or narrating the hardships that the poor did take any job to not starve.

In short, this is a masterpiece, a film that always stand the test of time, where we can see an extraordinary interpretation of one of the best players in the history of Spanish cinema as Alfredo Landa.
