Us Schools Are Closing Because of Ebola

16 October 2014 2:15 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

In Ohio and Texas, schools are closing as a precaution against Ebola. Earlier this week, a second health-care worker was diagnosed with Ebola in Dallas, TX, a development that the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention are calling "a serious concern." Unfortunately, she traveled on a commercial flight from Cleveland to Dallas the day before she was diagnosed, prompting extra concern in those states. The news came just after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg announced a donation of $25 million to help fight Ebola. In a Facebook post, Zuckerburg noted that the epidemic is at "a critical turning point," saying he believes his grant "is the quickest way to empower the Cdc." The first-ever Ebola diagnosis in the Us was confirmed earlier this month, and last week, the Ebola patient in Dallas, TX, died. For a full breakdown on what's happening in the Us and around the world, here are some frequently asked questions about Ebola, »

The 'Burbs and Joe Dante's gleeful suburban chaos

11 September 2014 8:38 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Through his films such as The 'Burbs and Gremlins, director Joe Dante made mischief in American suburbia, Ryan writes...

Mayfield Place is the perfect 80s suburbia. There are painted houses fringed by lush green lawns cut to just the right length, separated by a wide grey road. There are white picket fences. The neighbours are out, tending to their gardens beneath a pristine blue sky.

Thirty-something resident Ray Peterson stands in his front yard, surveys the scene, and sees that it is good.

Except this is a Joe Dante film, and things are never good for long in a Joe Dante film.

Queenie, the little white dog belonging to the old guy across the road, has just left a spire of brown poop on Mark Rumsfield's lawn. Mark, a Vietnam vet and patriot, is running around in his camo shorts, threatening to eviscerate Walter's dog. Elsewhere, Ray's schlubby neighbour Art »

Dog Finds Newborn Baby Abandoned by Side of Road

29 July 2014 1:30 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

It was a road less traveled by Jeff Kopp and his dog, Bobby. But something inspired the pooch to take a different route down Marion Road on Monday in Diamond Lake, Michigan, and it's a good thing that Kopp obliged. The dog pulled his owner to a satellite dish just three feet away from the dirt road where a newborn baby had been left. "I saw what [looked like] a rabbit at first," Kopp told Wood TV8. "Then it moved. That's when I started yelling." The hours-old baby girl, whose umbilical cord was still attached, was laying in the fetal position with leaves on her face, »

Bryan Cranston: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked

16 May 2014 6:21 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Warner Bros.

There’s a good chance you don’t know as much about Bryan Cranston as you might initially suspect: though he is now most known for two TV performances, in Breaking Bad and Malcolm In The Middle who fed off each other thanks to their fundamental – even grotesque – difference, his filmography has taken in as diverse destinations as Saving Private Ryan, Street Fighter II and Power Rangers. He didn’t merely arrive at Walter White as the complete article: a cursory glance over his earliest roles in a made for TV Six Million Dollar Man movie (like fellow auspicious alumni Sandra Bullock), and bargain bin dross like Dead Space and chewy sex-slop like Erotique paints a picture of a jobbing (and probably struggling) actor bouncing through genres.

It wasn’t until casting opportunities like his bit-part in Saving Private Ryan that the tide seems to have turned, as »

London — As the lineup for the third Sundance London film and music festival is unveiled, Variety talks to John Cooper, director of the Sundance Film Festival, and Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming, about the selection (see below for full lineup).

Sundance London, which runs April 25-27, will include 21 feature films and 18 shorts across five sections, as well as live performances by a number of musical acts, which will be linked to movies screening at the fest, and a series of panel discussions.

Cooper says that when Robert Redford and the Sundance team set up the London event, one of their motivations was to give added exposure to U.S. indie films in the international market.

“We realized that the international life of an American independent film was crucial to its success,” he says. The London fest’s creation was partly driven by an impulse to do “anything we »
