A drama about the working relationship between Assistant DA Tess Kaufman, a prosecutor sensitive to the rights of the accused, and hard-charging, gruff Detective Dicky Cobb, an old-fashioned cop with a "bust-the-perps" attitude.
Elmer Jackson is a carpenter in a small Californian town in the 1930s. Struggling to bring up 4 young boys after the death of his wife, he is horrified when the Government (citing trumped-up charges of parental neglect) places the boys into various foster homes and institutions, unaware of the abuse that boys would then be subjected to. The conditions imposed by the court and the difficulties caused by the Depression make Jackson's determined and vigorous quest to find his boys extremely difficult. Written by

We are all victims of "circumstances," trying to cope as best we can with forces beyond our control that may determine the course our lives take, for better or worse. That is why virtually everyone will be touched by this heart-rending picture, a story of decent people trapped by conditions that turn them into victims. There is no happy ending - only a partially satisfying resolution of a struggle which demonstrates the courage and determination that people must sometimes look for within themselves, and hope to find.
Everything about this film is handled with the extreme sensitivity its theme deserves.
