Storyline

This series offers an unflinching look at the "tours of duty" of several members of a platoon during the Vietnam War. Death is inevitable in war, and major characters do die. The protagonists face the Viet Cong, social disapproval, and sometimes themselves over the course of the series. Written by Jason A. Cormier <wildrose@mindspring.com>

Trivia

While the Special Operations Group or SOG that the unit joins in season 3 usually recruited from special forces outfits they did take operators from regular infantry units. One such example is Franklin D Miller who did 7 tours of duty spending 7 years in Vietnam, winning countless decorations and medals including the Medal Of Honor during a hellish and intense mission. Frank started out in an infantry platoon just like the fictional characters on the show and spent 2 years "in the bush" before he'd even heard of the special forces much less MACV-SOG. But upon hearing about them he applied and after a rigorous selection process he made the cut. So while it's possible for a regular infantry soldier to have made it in SOG never wrangled entire squads or units into their operation as is depicted in season 3. Which if research is done may seem odd or strange to some as the unit suffered over 115% casualties, meaning everyone in the unit who went into the field was at some point either wounded or killed making it one of, if not the most, dangerous combat posting in Vietnam. Quotes

Private Danny Purcell: [about a village that was massacred by another American platoon] You guys just don't get it. We killed those people. Even if we weren't the ones who pulled the triggers, we did it! What if it was back home? What if those were your sisters, your brothers, your parents? When I think about it, I want to puke my guts out! But, I can't... I've been here too damn long.

Virtually PLATOON the series
21 July 2001 | by (Allentown, PA) – See all my reviews

TOUR OF DUTY, like Oliver Stone's PLATOON only a year before,

shows the emotional, social, and mental sides of the Vietnam War. In oppose to those larger than life war shows and movies (including THE A-TEAM or RAMBO II), the purpose of TOUR OF DUTY is to display how the young American troops felt and experience regarding the horrors of war, and they do a fine job at that. Terrance Knox and Stephen

Caffrey are fine as the leaders the platoon in subject.
