Olsens Sign Petition After Sweatshop Scandal

12 December 2004 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Teen millionairesses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen demanded retail giant Wal-mart provide female factory workers in Bangladesh with maternity leave and benefits in New York Thursday. The Full House stars, 18, were horrified to discover the workers creating their Olsen Twins clothing line, which is sold in Wal-Mart stores, were working in poor conditions. Just hours after a protest by members of America's National Labor Committee (NLC) began at Washington Square Park near New York University, where the sisters are studying, Mary-Kate and Ashley signed the petition for Wal-Mart to give workers the "legal right to maternity leave with benefits". Their spokesman, Michael Pagnotta says, "Both organizations are talking and we hope it will come to a positive result. We certainly take the issue of fair treatment for workers seriously." A Wal-Mart statement regarding general sweat-shop allegations reads, "We feel that our program is helping to improve working conditions and create economic opportunity for workers around the world." »

Olsen Twin Speaks Out About Sister's Anorexia

29 June 2004 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Troubled Mary-Kate Olsen's twin sister Ashley Olsen has revealed her sibling chose to tackle her anorexia so she was fit and ready for studies at New York University this autumn. Ashley has spoken exclusively with America's upcoming People magazine about her hopes for her sister, who shocked Hollywood earlier this month when she checked into a treatment center to fight her eating disorder. She says, "She's been struggling for quite a while. She is taking the time she needs for herself. Right now is especially a good time right before school so she can get healthy." Ashley Olsen insists her twin is doing well, thanks mainly to the support of fans. She adds, "She's hanging in there. We all really appreciate the support we're getting from our fans and everyone else. The support's been really amazing." Meanwhile, the Olsens' former TV show co-star John Stamos admits he was surprised when he heard about Mary-Kate's problems - and he's convinced his old friend will be fine. Stamos, who teamed up with the Olsens when they were young kids in sitcom Full House, says, "They were at my house recently and Mary-Kate seemed in great shape. They're gonna be fine. If that's the worst thing that can happen, they're still in good shape." »

Olsen Twins in Restaurant Confrontation

18 February 2004 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A New York restaurateur has slammed acting twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen after their bodyguard tried to barge him out of the way in his own eaterie. The Full House stars were eating with friends at New York's packed Serafina on Valentine's Day when the incident occurred. According to Serafina co-owner Fabio Granato the Olsen minder became agitated after Granato refused to move out of the way to accommodate the party. Granato says, "I was at the podium near the entrance speaking to my manager when this big guy starts saying, 'You guys move to the other side.' I said, 'You move, I'm working here.' He says, 'Who are you?' And I said, 'Get away.'" Granato says that, after being pushed by the bodyguard, one of Serafina's own security escorted the man to the door, reports website Page Six. Granato adds, "The other guy had to keep an eye on them from outside the restaurant." »
