5 TV Shows to Watch If You Miss College Life

12 May 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Ah, sweet college -- the perfect fusion of freedom and dependence, childhood and adulthood, midterms and hangovers. For many students, it takes escaping high school and heading off to college to find out who they really are and who they really want to be. It's okay to miss it sometimes, or even most of the time.

Fortunately, television will always be here to help you relive your glory days. These college-set series cover the good, the bad, and the hilariously pathetic parts of higher learning. For every randomly selected roommate who became an instant best friend, there was a mind-numbingly boring professor with a two-hour lecture on the origin of language. For every idyllic fall day on campus, there was a boxed macaroni-and-cheese mishap. And for every deep, personal revelation, there was a moment of being too hungover to get out of bed, let along get to class.

The subversive messages snuck into Melrose Place

For 2 years in the 1990s, an art group snuck props containing hidden political messages into Fox’s glamorous soap, Melrose Place

When it comes to matters of morality and ethics, Us TV Networks are notoriously strict on what their shows may or may not depict. Remember the episode of Friends in which Rachel and Monica fight over the apartment’s last condom? After the fuss following Seinfeld’s condom episode, NBC stopped the creators from showing an actual condom wrapper, hence the use of a generic box.

The same went for A Different World episode Time Keeps On Slippin, when Producer-Director Debbie Allen was forced to have a character point to a handbag rather than show a packaged condom.

A similar stringent attitude applies to alcohol and drug references. In The Italian Bob episode of The Simpsons when Lisa gets drunk, Fox banned producers from showing her »

Interview: ‘Big Stone Gap’ Writer/Director Adriana Trigiani to Appear at Chicago Screening

7 February 2016 10:32 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – One of the truest aphorisms ever uttered is that “you can take a person out of a small town, but you can’t take the small town out of them.” Veteran novelist, TV/film writer and now director Adriana Trigiani took that eternal truth and created a film tribute to her heritage in “Big Stone Gap” (2015). Loyola University in Chicago will have a special screening of the film, with an appearance by Ms. Trigiani afterward (via Skype), on Monday, February 8th, 2016 (details below).

Adriana Trigiani celebrated her Italian roots and Appalachian background first in the “Big Stone Gap” series of novels, which began in 2000, and currently is on its fourth book. This was after she had a successful career in television writing, working on “The Cosby Show,” “A Different World,” and “City Kids” (for ABC/Jim Henson productions). Besides the Big Stone Gap book series, she has also authored »

Crush of the week: Jada Pinkett Smith

29 January 2016 10:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

It took guts for Pinkett Smith to call out the diversity whitewash at the Oscars. Even millionaires are not totally immune to Hollywood’s wrath

For all its stars, Hollywood is still a place of underappreciated and untapped talent, with actors waiting for a perfect storm to form overhead: the right role, at the right time, catching the right audience. And then, boom, they get long-overdue attention. It’s a common story, and now it applies to Jada Pinkett Smith, whom I’ve loved for a very long time.

Now 44, she is that cliche of a small woman: fun-sized (5ft!) and a human dynamo. She twinkles. I first saw her on A Different World, playing a college kid unafraid to hustle, and while she stayed on my radar through the 90s, it was in the unfairly overlooked Set It Off (1996) that she seared herself into my mind. As Stoney, a desperate and sort-of-reluctant bank robber, »

Is You, Me and the Apocalypse Just the Jolt NBC Needs?

28 January 2016 10:31 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

How dry is the NBC comedy well? Dry enough that it's taking straight-up imports. It's not unheard of for ABC to air Canadian cop shows in the summertime, say, but not so long ago, the eight o'clock Thursday slot on NBC was as primo as primo got, which is where the network has placed Sky 1's You, Me and the Apocalypse. Here is a brief history of what has aired in that time slot over the last 30-odd years:The 1984–85 TV season until the 1991–92 TV season: The Cosby Show 1992–93 TV season: A Different World, Out All Night (that was a one-season Patti Labelle show), Mad About You 1993–94 and 1994–95: Mad About You 1995–96 through 2003–04: Friends 2004–05: Joey 2005–06: Joey, Will and Grace 2006–07 through 2008–09: My Name Is Earl 2009–10 and 10–11: Community 2011–12: Community, 30 Rock 2012–13: 30 Rock, Community 2013–14: Parks and Recreation, Community 2014–16: »

Exclusive: Watch a clip from 'The Hunger Games' collection, available this spring

27 January 2016 9:00 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In 2008, Suzanne Collins released “The Hunger Games” into the world. Four years later the movie would cement Jennifer Lawrence as a blockbuster star. But all good things must come to an end. Last year the final installment  — “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II” — brought the entirety of Panem society crashing down. If you had read the books, you probably joined in the discussions about whether the film would dare go as far as the novels to show that war rarely has winners. Well, they did it. They dared to blur the line between heroes and villains. In the clip above — exclusive to HitFix Harpy ahead of the home video release — even Katniss isn’t immune to succumbing to her darker instincts. HitFix Harpy is also happy to announce the “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II” Digital HD and Blu-Ray Combo Pack release date! The final chapter can »

I don't mean shows that started in high school and end in college, but shows that started in college and then maybe transitioned to the real world. My picks are A Different World, Greek, and Fresh Meat. I'm tempted to include Skins and My Mad Fat Diary, but they have different meanings for college and university across the pond.
