Charles S. Dutton,
This series took place in an apartment building, numbered 227. The cast would frequently be found sitting outside on a large set of stone stairs, in some discussion that would unfold into the weekly plot line.
The series was not initially intended as a direct spin-off from The Cosby Show. The original premise centered around Maggie Lauten (Marisa Tomei) and her experiences as a white student attending a predominantly and historically black college. Eventually, it was decided to include Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) in the series, and Maggie instead became a supporting character. When Debbie Allen took over as producer, she became intrigued by the original idea and wanted the series to partly center around Maggie and explore related issues as part of her revamping the series. Allen even considered a romantic pairing between Maggie and Dwayne (Kadeem Hardison), but ideas relating to Maggie were dropped when Marisa Tomei decided to leave the series. See more »

"A, Different World" a spin-off from the smash hit "Cosby Show" which had Huxtable daughter Denise (Lisa Bonet) off to college to find out a different world laid ahead. Denise dropped out of the mostly black college only to have the series improve and become a hit with other cast members. The best characters had to be the uppity Whitley (Jasmine Guy), and the well liked and super-cool math major Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) along with his best friend Ron (Darryl M. Bell). The pit was the place the gang hung out for everything from meals to talk. The theme song sung by Phoebe Snow really is the truth once you leave home from your parents it really is a different world.
