Abbie Hoffman

22 November 2004
Radical activist and writer, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. After graduating from Brandeis University (1959) and earning a masters in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley (1960), he joined civil-rights workers in the South before returning to Worcester to work as a salesman for a pharmaceutical company. He cut his teeth as an activist in Worcester (c.1960-6), where he especially assisted minority youth. Moving to New York City (1966), he ran a theater and helped organize 'hippies' in the East Village. He came to national prominence as a Yippie leader during the violent anti-war demonstrations ('days of rage') in Chicago (1968) and the much-publicized Chicago Seven trial (1969). Arrested for possession of cocaine (1973), he went underground (1974) and assumed the name Barry Freed in Fineview, NY, where he worked on environmental concerns. Resurfacing on the television show '20/20' (1980), he surrendered to authorities and spent less than a year in prison. Among his several books are Steal this Book and Revolution for the Hell of It. His last public demonstration (1986) was in support of an anti-Central Intelligence Agency protest at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, along with President Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy Carter. Evidently in a bout of depression, he committed suicide.

2008
When he called himself "a skinny kid with a funny name" at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, his political star was already on the rise. By the time he decimated the competition in 2004 race for the Illinois Senate, he was the bona fide golden child of a Democratic party desperately in need of a winner.

Barbara Stanwyck: Straight Down the Line

12 May 1997
Born Ruby Stevens, she was orphaned when she was four. A chance audition led to a chorus job. By 17 she was a Zeigfield Girl. At 20 she earned excellent reviews for a bit part in a Broadway play -- and she had a new name: Barbara Stanwyck. Her first marriage was to vaudeville headliner, Frank Fay. When Hollywood beckoned, it was Fay who convinced Frank Capra to give Barbara her first real break. But as Stanwyck's career took off, Fay's sank. Fay's jealousy and drinking led to divorce. Barbara's greatest love was actor Robert Taylor, her second husband. But even that didn't last and she spent the greater part of her life alone. However, there was always the one love she could rely on: her work -- in over 80 feature films and a rich career in television. Included are clips from: Ladies of Leisure , Annie Oakley, Golden Boy, The Lady Eve, Meet John Doe, Double Indemnity, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers , Sorry, Wrong Number , Clash By Night and The Thorn Birds. Interviewed are: actors Robert Wagner, Robert Stack, Roddy McDowall, Ricardo Montalban and Charlton Heston, producer Aaron Spelling, director Edward Dymtryk, dress designer Nolan Miller, biographers Ella Smith and Bob Thomas.

Ben and Jerry

2006
With flavor names like Phish Food and Karamel Sutra, Ben & Jerry's Homemade ice cream has built a reputation over the years as a fun-loving company with a unique and creative approach to business. When Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield met in gym class in 1963, they realized that they shared two important qualities: a hatred for running and a love for food. They also agreed that it was no fun being in business just to earn a living--they wanted to enjoy themselves too. So in 1977 they turned to ice cream making by enrolling in a $5 correspondence course to learn the craft. Their recipe was a sophisticated concoction: a blend of fresh Vermont milk, cream and generous portions of whatever ingredients took their fancy.

Bruce Lee: The Immortal Dragon

18 January 1994
A video tribute to a martial arts legend, Bruce Lee. Examined are his early years in Hong Kong and his journey to Hollywood, his role of Kato on the TV series 'The Green Hornet', and his years as the martial arts instructor to the stars. Lee's spectacular rise to super stardom through his Kung Fu films is detailed, with a revealing look at both the on-screen action and behind the scenes controversy. Celebrity interviews include actor James Coburn talking about Lee as a teacher and collaborator, and actress Diane McBain on Lee's Kato years. Lee's successors in martial arts cinema are profiled, and theories offered about mysterious deaths of Bruce Lee and his son Brandon. Plus rare footage and more! Although his life was cut short at the age of 32, Bruce Lee-- through his movies and his teachings-- will forever be remembered as the Immortal Dragon!

Burt Lancaster: Daring to Reach

15 March 1996
Born November 2, 1913, he went from street-wise tough to art-collector liberal-activist, from circus-acrobat hunk to Academy Award winner. Burton Stephen Lancaster - later Burt Lancaster - was one of five children of a New York City postal worker. Burt recalled family life as warm and mutually supportive. At the Union Settlement House, he and boyhood friend Nick Cravat formed an acrobatic team. By eighteen, Burt was 6'2'' and blessed with the athletic physique and dynamic good looks that helped make him famous. A basketball scholarship was not enough to keep him in NYU beyond his sophomore year. That's when he and the 5'2'' Cravat joined a circus, earning $3 weekly between them. A stint in the Army introduced Burt to acting and led him to Hollywood where his first release, The Killers (1946), propelled him to stardom at age 32. He took control of his own career and seldom faltered. He was married three times and had five children. Upon his death in 1994, four-time Academy Award-nominated Burt Lancaster was acknowledged as one of the greatest stars in the Hollywood firmament.

6 May 1996
The famous commander of the Bounty has been immortalized in literature and film as the leader who was so onerous that his crew deposed him on the high seas. This documentary checks into the facts, and the factual Bligh is seen as much different person than the fictitious one. Journals, diaries, and the insights of scholars provide the facts of the actual mutiny.
