A Better Tomorrow 2012 hits UK Blu-ray

30 May 2012 12:33 PM, PDT | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Well here’s for a change, an Asian country remaking an Asian film. The reboot in question is Hae-sung Song’s Korean s 2010 big budget remake of John Woo's 80’s Hk action classic...A Better Tomorrow....and Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment are bringing it to the UK on DVD and 3D Blu-ray. Being huge fans of the original we’re bound to be a little biased against a remake, but saying that reviews on the whole have tipped more towards the positive, and most agree you cant fault it for some full on action. Time will tell….A Better Tomorrow streets on June 11. Synopsis: Hyuk lives the fast life as a high-ranking mobster in Busan, South Korea with his closest pal, fellow mobster Lee Young-Chun. Hyuk is haunted by the memory of leaving behind his younger brother Chul and mother as they attempted to flee into South Korea from North Korea. »

IFC Midnight to give Us Viewers a Taste Of Money With Im Sang-soo's Latest

29 May 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Im Sang-soo's new film The Taste of Money, which competed in Cannes last week, has been picked up by IFC Midnight for Us distribution. Im's previous film The Housemaid (2010), which also vied in competition at Cannes, was also distributed in North America by IFC Midnight and benefited from a decent amount of exposure. I recall being surprised when I noticed its availability on Time Warner's On Demand service when I lived in La.The Taste of Money, which stars Kim Kang-woo (A Better Tomorrow, 2009), Yoon Yuh-jung (Actresses, 2009), Baek Yoon-shik (Save the Green Planet, 2003) and Kim Hyo-jin (Woochi, 2009), brings us inside the lives of one of the richest families in Korea and their tale of greed, lust and violence. I'm not sure if »

New John Woo Film In The Works: Day Of The Beast

16 May 2012 8:31 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Upcoming project is a remake of ’60s Yakuza flick.

I was never more interested in movies and filmmaking than I was in the early ’90s, when I was coming out of high school.  As far as movies go, it was an interesting era, in that the major studios were lavishing unheard-of sums of money upon productions that were clearly destined to wind up being utter shit, while off in the periphery, what would become annoyingly known as the “independent film movement” was just starting to catch its footing.

Among the guys at the forefront of this movement were Robert Rodriguez, who had submitted himself to medical testing to raise the money for his first micro-budget movie, El Mariachi, and Quentin Tarantino, who on the heels of Reservoir Dogs, was being pursued by every big-name actor in town for the privilege of providing him their services at union scale.

Time Magazine released their list of 100 Most Influential People for 2012, and four comedians, two men and two women, made the list: Louis C.K., Stephen Colbert, Chelsea Handler and Kristen Wiig.

Each comedian included has had a particularly notable year, not only performing at the top of his or her game comedically but influencing culture and changing their industry. For C.K., Handler and Wiig, this year marks the first time they have been included on the list. Colbert was last included in 2006, the year after "The Colbert Report" debuted on Comedy Central.

The list was selected by Time's editors. Comedians Aziz Ansari, Marc Maron and Melissa McCarthy also made the short list of finalists for Time 100.

The Winners:

New Clip From Let The Bullets Fly

28 February 2012 6:23 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

I spent large portions of junior high and high school watching Chow Yun-Fat kick major ass in movies like “Hard Boiled”, “A Better Tomorrow”, and too many other Hong Kong bullet operas to name. Needless to say, I’m pretty pumped at the idea of him playing a violent crime boss in “Let the Bullets Fly”, an insane action/comedy from director Jiang Wen (who also stars in the film). If you’re not already excited for this, there is a chaotic new clip that will kick your adrenal glands into overdrive. The sheer number of gunshots in this 90 second clip is awe-inspiring, and when you add random bodies falling from the sky…well, you got me. Hook, line, sinker. In this pitch-black action-comedy, the legendary bandit “Pocky” Zhang violently crosses paths with the con man Tang, who desperately offers up an intriguing proposition: Zhang will become the governor of Goose Town, »

Countdown (2011) Movie Review

15 February 2012 11:12 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

“Countdown” is an all star Korean thriller headlined by two of the country’s most popular talents, namely award winning actress Jeon Do Yeon (“The Housemaid”) and Jung Jae Young (“Moss”), who last appeared together back in 2002 in Ryoo Seung Wan’s “No Blood No Tears”. Combining tense action and tough melodrama, the film marks the debut of writer director Huh Jong Ho, and also features Lee Kyung Young (“A Better Tomorrow”), Oh Man Seok (“Finding Mr Destiny”) and Min from girl group Miss A in her first screen outing. Jung Jae Young plays Gun Ho, a stoic debt collector with memory problems, who is himself deep in hock. After being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and only given a few months to live, he sets out trying to track down the five people who were donated the organs of his dead son some years back, hoping that they will return the favour. »

Stephen Colbert Transfers Super Pac Power To Jon Stewart As He Considers Presidential Run

13 January 2012 9:03 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

By Zachary Swickey

Our favorite political pot-stirrer Stephen Colbert is causing a joyous ruckus once again. After polling in South Carolina, his home state, at five percent, Colbert has passed his Super Pac to his old chum Jon Stewart and is planning on forming an exploratory committee for a possible presidential run (we’re surprised Kanye isn’t doing the same with his “Donda” project).

For months now, Colbert has been comically mocking the South Carolina Republicans and their presidential primary, and it appears he’s diving into the race headfirst. A new poll has revealed Colbert is even favored ahead of Jon Huntsman in South Carolina.

Additionally, the Palmetto Public Record reveals that Colbert’s Super Pac – Americans For A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow – is in negotiations with buying some media in the Columbia market. Airtime is pricey during the primary season, so Colbert surely has a solid ace up his sleeve. »

Six Of The Best – Little-Seen Gems

12 January 2012 5:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This sort of thing can rapidly turn into a vanity project, so I will have to watch my step a little. Laudable as it is to try to bring to people’s attention some splendid films which they may not have seen, it can swiftly deteriorate into, “oh gosh, you haven’t seen Cube: Zero, what kind of film fan do you call yourself?”.

So the criterion here is not obscurity, nor necessarily five-star classic status, rather this is an effort at a simple introduction to a handful of rarely seen and perhaps under-appreciated films that you might want to catch when and where you can. I’ve tried to mix up the genres a little and so hopefully everyone can find something they will like.
