Not that bad
17 August 2013 | by (Valhalla) – See all my reviews

...I mean, yes it's bad. But it is very easily watchable and actually gets a few things right. I found this through my brother who is a big Fairuza Balk fan and this is the guilty pleasure that he is PERSONALLY ASHAMED OF. So Drop Dead Fred is okay, Dead Hooker in a Trunk is okay, this is what he was personally ashamed of. I personally think that this is better than both movies but I can see to an extent why a 17 year old boy would find this a movie to be personally ashamed of liking if they like it at all.

The plot of this movie is that Mildred Hubble is a girl at a school for witches and she never gets spells right and to some extent is accident prone. While she is trying to get something right she is bullied by the top of the class (I guess in this world the top of the class is the equivalent to the cool kid... In a school where they get to perform magic I can see why) and stumbles across a plot by the headmaster's twin sister to destroy the school and put it under her control.

Now I did say that this movie got a few things right and I will say them now. I think Mildred is actually a character to feel sympathy for. I mean yes, her being accident prone most of the time is a little bit much but I find her a likable character. I also liked some of the acting from people like Fairuza Balk and others but the only down point in the acting is that Charlotte Rae in her role as the villain (I word it like that because she plays 2 parts if you didn't get that vibe from my synopsis) is over the top.

So what do I find wrong with this movie? Well, mainly my problem is basically whatever plot there is, it's disjointed to say the very least. The plot I described above isn't that well addressed and is only there for about half an hour.

Which leads me to another point, you remember when I said that Charlotte Rae is over the top as a villain. She also is pretty un-menacing, even for a villain in a children's film. It literally takes Mildred one move to stop her and her henchmen.

I also didn't really like the whole Terror tag thing. For a whole 4 minutes you are subjected to girls trying to scare each other. Maybe it's my age but that was really bad.

So is there anything else to say about this movie? Maybe the fact that there is a hint that the filmmakers were actually trying to do something with the characters even if it doesn't really work. I haven't seen the TV show (well I did sit through one episode... I don't even remember how long ago). So if you just want to keep your kids occupied for 70 minutes then this movie is for you.
