I still haven’t seen Independence Day: Resurgence, and there’s a good chance I won’t. When 20th Century Fox made the decision not to screen the film for Us press in advance of the film’s opening, they sent a very clear message to anyone paying attention, and it’s a message that I believe more and more studios would love to send to critics, especially on their giant event films: not only do we not need you, but we don’t want you. At all. And it’s true. Studios don’t really need to screen movies for critics. It’s a professional agreement that we all participate in, but more and more often, studios screen later and almost begrudgingly. I am amazed how many times this year alone I’ve had to basically beg to even find out when or if a screening is happening. The »

Imagine the 1955 Humphrey Bogart/Fredric March movie The Desperate Hours if it were invaded by a killer black mamba. That’s Venom, only instead of Bogart and March, it’s Klaus Kinski and Oliver Reed, two incredibly talented but famously difficult actors, attempting to devour both the scenery and one another. Though it went into production with Tobe Hooper as director, he left the film fairly early on (with vague reports of “it just wasn’t working” as an explanation) and was replaced by Piers Haggard, the British filmmaker responsible for Blood on Satan’s Claw. He found himself in a difficult and unhappy situation, guiding a movie that wasn’t his and run roughshod over by his actors. »

Recognizing that it’s more than likely an unpopular opinion, I need to come clean and confess that I prefer Tobe Hooper’s 1986 sequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, to its predecessor, which I’m also quick to point out is an unparalleled masterpiece of the genre. This has everything to do with personal taste. Tobe Hooper is one of my favorite filmmakers of all-time, and while I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen his 1974 classic, I probably revisit Part 2 every year. It’s one of my very favorite horror movies.
The third film in a trilogy Hooper made for Cannon Films in the 1980s (the other two being the brilliantly bonkers Lifeforce and Hooper’s remake of Invaders From Mars, released just a couple of months before TCM2 in ’86), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 was the movie the director had to »

This third week of April has some exciting home entertainment offerings for us genre fans, including the special edition releases of two cult classics I adore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and The Stuff. An indie film I’ve been hearing about for a while now, Grimewave, also makes its way to DVD this Tuesday and while it may not be traditional horror, Oscar-winner The Revenant certainly has enough badassery contained within its cinematic frames to be worthy of mentioning this week, and it arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD on April 19th.
Other notable releases this week include Smothered (which features a ton of horror icons and was directed by John Schneider of Smallville and Dukes of Hazzard fame), 15 Till Midnight, Classroom 6, Ip Man 3, German Angst and She Wolf Rising.

Let’s be honest here: Scream Factory is a continuous machine, releasing genre favorites and various other films every year, with a strong emphasis on putting out films that horror fans have been dying to see given the deluxe treatment. From the early days of putting out awesome special editions of films like Halloween III and Lifeforce, to their ongoing partnership with IFC Midnight for releases such as The Babadook or Dark Summer, it’s a surefire fact that they’ve instilled an all across the board approach to the horror home video plateau. We dedicated a pretty hefty amount of time this past week to giving recent and upcoming Sf releases an in depth look, so naturally, here’s part one of our two-part our Massive Scream Factory rundown review!

We previously reported that the gang at Scream Factory are about to make the month of April an awesome one, with the 4/12 double feature of Anthony Perkins-led films Destroyer and Edge Of Sanity (link). Personally, that alone is reason enough to celebrate, but any respectable horror fan knows that the Sf crew likes to go big. Corin Hardy (the upcoming reboot of The Crow)’s The Hallow is arriving April 5th, with the tale of a man up against a demonic entity, loosened from the wilderness around it. We had a short chat with Hardy last year, and it’s definitely enough to get genre fans excited for this Scream Factory/IFC Midnight team-up release.

The saw is most definitely family as far as I’m concerned, and Scream Factory’s breaking news regarding their epic 2-disc Collector’s Edition of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is music to my ears. A lifelong fan of Tobe Hooper’s batshit insane sequel to his classic original film is a dark comedic twist on Leatherface and his crazy family. Fans excited for the release (who Isn’T stoked on this one?) can now mark their calendars, because the DVD/Bluray is heading your way on April 19th. Though the special features haven’t been announced yet (my knowing of what will be on them can assure you: it’s worth the wait!) , the awesome artwork by Joel Robinson (he did the artwork for Scream Factory’s Nightbreed, The Serpent and the Rainbow and Ginger Snaps) will absolutely blow your minds.
