Stephen King adaptations, and straying from source material

Riyad Emeran Dec 11, 2017

Should filmmakers stick religiously to the source material? In the case of Stephen King adaptations, it can work very well both ways...

I watched The Shining recently, a film I haven’t seen for at least 15 years, maybe more. The first time I watched The Shining I was far too young for what was an X certificate movie at the time – VHS had opened the door to a whole host of viewing options for young teens – and I remember being disappointed at the lack of 'horror' on show. But when I revisited The Shining with more mature eyes, I realised that horror wasn’t just about violence and gore, and the truly disturbing nature of the film and its underlying story became clear.

Watching it again, now, I’m surprised at how powerful it still is. Yes, Shelly Duvall’s performance is still as comically insipid as it has always been,

Misery, 1990.

A co-worker and I like to talk about how the marketing content we produce isn’t the flashiest, sexiest stuff out there, but it’s the kind of nuts-and-bolts work that gets the job done. Our analogy is that we’re making well-built furniture that may not win design awards, but it’s functional.

That’s how I feel about Misery, which was directed by Rob Reiner and adapted by the legendary William Goldman from

We may only have several home entertainment releases for this Tuesday, but as the saying goes, “quality over quantity,” because this bunch of Blu-rays and DVDs are a stellar lot of films. One of my favorite horror films of 2017, Mark DuplassCreep 2, makes its way home on November 28th courtesy of The Orchard, and Scream Factory has given Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery the Collector’s Edition treatment (and deservedly so).

For you cult film fans, both Death Laid an Egg and Deathdream (aka Dead of Night) get the HD treatment this week, and other notable releases this Tuesday include M.F.A., Rememory, Super Dark Times, Woodshock, and Trailer Trauma 4: Television Trauma.

James Franco Reveals Why He Became ‘Frustrated’ After 10 Years of Acting and Had to Do More — Watch
Everyone knows James Franco likes to keep busy, but the reason why he wears so many hats is less apparent. The actor, writer, producer, and director spoke to IndieWire’s Eric Kohn about this and more during last week’s IndieWire Honors ceremony, revealing how acting left him “frustrated” after 10 years and he eventually “fell in love with the collaborative process.”

“I always loved movies from a very young age,” said Franco, who received the Vanguard Award (Film) last week. “I used to just be a watcher of movies; I didn’t really understand how they work. I thought all those kids in ‘Stand by Me’ and ‘The Goonies’ were just sort of born into it, and then as I got older I realized, ‘Oh, there are, you know, ways to sort of develop different sorts of crafts.”

Shawn Levy to give Stand By Me a sci-fi spin with Crater

  • JoBlo
If you ever thought that Rob Reiner's Stand By Me, the classic 1986 coming-of-age drama starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell, would have been better had it been set on the Moon, then a new project from Shawn Levy may be just what the doctor ordered. Variety reports that Twentieth Century Fox has bought Crater, a sci-fi spec script by John J. Griffin, and is... Read More...

Fox and Shawn Levy Team on Sci-Fi Spec ‘Crater’ (Exclusive)

Fox and Shawn Levy Team on Sci-Fi Spec ‘Crater’ (Exclusive)
Fox has bought the spec script “Crater” by John J. Griffin with Shawn Levy in talks to direct. Levy will produce along with 21 Laps’ Dan Levine.

Crater” is described as a coming-of-age story in the vein of “Stand By Me,” set on a moon colony. After the death of his father, a boy growing up on a lunar mining colony takes a trip to explore a mysterious crater, along with his four best friends, prior to being permanently relocated to another planet.

VFX vet Rpin Suwannath, who will now exec produce, originally conceived the idea and was paired with Griffin by their Wme reps to construct the story. Once the script was solid, it wasn’t long before it was put in front of Levy and 21 Laps, who quickly signed on to produce and came to Fox with the idea that it would be developed as a directing vehicle for Levy.

The Best Coming-of-Age Movies Ever Made — IndieWire Critics Survey

The Best Coming-of-Age Movies Ever Made — IndieWire Critics Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: In honor of Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” what is the best coming-of-age movie ever made?

Siddhant Adlakha (@SidizenKane), Birth.Movies.Death.

While it may not fit the western paradigm of a traditional coming of age film (neither a high school setting nor teenage angst or confusion find themselves the focus), “Lion” holds the distinction of being a rare modern movie that gets to the root of key questions of dual identity, questions that will only become more prominent in the age of globalism. It’s the most extreme version of having your feet in two cultures; Saroo Brierley (Sunny Pawar, Dev Patel) finds himself

10 Things You Didn’t Know about “Stand By Me”

As far as coming of age stories go Stand By Me is one of the best. The curious thing about this story is that it came from a short tale written by Stephen King, who’s been known for so long primarily for his horror stories. This tale wasn’t horrific in any way or even all that much of a thriller really. It was four friends embarking on a journey towards a revelation they hadn’t realized yet, making their way through the wilds of Oregon as young boys were wont to do back in the day. It was also one of

Dacre Montgomery's Audition Tape For Billy in Stranger Things Belongs in the Smithsonian

By now, Stranger Things fans are well-acquainted with Billy, the hot new douchebag in Hawkins who has a butt that just won't quit. And underneath that glorious mullet and those tight jeans is the very handsome Dacre Montgomery, an Australian actor whom you may best recognize from the high-octane Power Rangers reboot. But before Montgomery could become the Billy we kind of hate but secretly love, he had to audition for the role. Enter the above audition tape, which was filmed by Montgomery and which has just been blessedly obtained by GQ. The video offers a wild journey of shirtlessness, lines from Stand by Me, and a couple of dance breaks. Put it in the Smithsonian.

‘Stranger Things’ Breakout Dacre Montgomery Defends Billy’s Bad Boy Behavior

‘Stranger Things’ Breakout Dacre Montgomery Defends Billy’s Bad Boy Behavior
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Season 2 of “Stranger Things.”]

It’s Ok to hate Billy Mayfield, the bully who loudly and violently made a splash in Hawkins, Indiana, for the second season of “Stranger Things.” After all, he follows in the footsteps of some of the classic ‘80s bullies in films such as “Teen Wolf,” “Stand by Me,” “Pretty in Pink,” “The Lost Boys,” “Footloose,” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.”

In fact, breakout star Dacre Montgomery had to read Kiefer Sutherland’s scene from “Stand by Me” – the 1986 Stephen King film that’s set in the late ‘50s – to demonstrate that he was threatening enough for the role. Billy’s personality is so aggressive that he’s a danger to others around him. He even beats Steve (Joe Keery) to a bloody pulp during a confrontation at the Byers house.

Corey Feldman’s Truth Campaign Has Raised $161,000 of $10 Million Goal (Video)
Corey Feldman wants to raise $10 million for a feature film that he promises will expose pedophiles in Hollywood. Unfortunately, the “Stand by Me” star is only about 1.6 percent of the way there. At the time of this writing, “Corey Feldman’s Truth Campaign” on IndieGogo has $161,472 pledged from 3,397 backers. It has two months left to raise more funds. The campaign was set up with a flexible goal, which means Feldman will receive whatever is raised — even if it doesn’t come to $10 million. He should probably start mentally preparing himself for that likelihood. Feldman is offering his...

Corey Feldman on Why He Wants $10 Million Before He’ll Name Hollywood Pedophiles (Video)
Corey Feldman wants to expose child predators in Hollywood, but the actor/musician says he needs $10 million to do it properly. The “Stand By Me” star wants to use crowd-sourced funds to produce a feature film focused on those who molested him as a kid — and he promises to name names with the project. Feldman has raised less than $200,000 to-date, but he maintains that “Corey’s Truth” must be a theatrical release. Many people — including the “Today” show’s Matt Lauer — don’t understand why. “It’s going to take a long time to raise $10 million and you’ve just told.

Stranger Things 2: retro teen sci-fi show's return is as delightful as ever

Netflix have thrown more money at last year’s surprise hit, and the knowing 1980s references and charming cast deliver another slice of nostalgia

There is a weight of expectation on the shoulder pads of Stranger Things 2, the follow-up series to Netflix’s revival of, and homage to, the adventurous spirit of 1980s films like The Goonies, Stand By Me and Et.

It made superstars of its young cast, was credited with re-energising the career of Winona Ryder, and won multiple awards, though its enormous impact seemed almost to take everyone by surprise, including Netflix.
