During Spike Lee's appearance on Who Do You Think You Are?: Spike Lee (2010) he discusses his character, Mars. He said that he could not come up with a name so he called his maternal grandmother and asked her for one and she gave him the name. Turns out that Mars was the name of her grandfather (Spike's great great grandfather).
