One of the most misleading movie titles ever, 14 March 2010
Author: sgtking from United States

When one goes to see a Horror movie they expect to be scared on some level. That's one of the things that makes seeing them so much fun. When a film fails to do this it raises questions like "Who would be scared by this?" These films bring our worst fears to life on the screen and if executed well it can be effective in making one afraid to shut out the lights or be sensitive to every strange noise in their house. Now sometimes the lack of successful scares can be forgiven if the movie works real well in other areas. Most low budget straight to video Horror films aren't this fortunate. 'Scared Stiff,' a film long forgotten, is such a film and isn't even worthy of being called a guilty pleasure. It's just guilty of being a total waste of ones time. Who did the makers of this think they were going to scare?

Pros: Actors do their best. The mansion is one eerie place. Moves at a surprisingly good pace for such an uneventful film. Pretty good job on the make-up effects.

Cons: Pedestrian writing. Choppy editing. Poorly lit. Attempts at scares fail. Tacky score. Takes so long to get to the "goods," which aren't even worth the wait. Dull direction. Laughable visual effects that were even dated in 1987. An ending that will leave you scratching your head.

Final thoughts: 'Scared Stiff' tries to scare you, but bombs every time. It looks and feels like a student film and the people responsible hopefully kept their day jobs and never attempted anything like this again. This movie has been lost and forgotten for years and that's just where it belongs. Had they used the overseas title 'The Masterson Curse' everywhere then I'm sure no one would have bothered to see this and would have been spared the pain.

My rating: 1.5/5
