Storyline

A journalist, down on his luck in the US, drives to El Salvador to chronicle the events of the 1980 military dictatorship, including the assasination of Archbishop Oscar Romero. He forms an uneasy alliance with both guerillas in the countryside who want him to get pictures out to the US press, and the right-wing military, who want him to bring them photographs of the rebels. Meanwhile he has to find a way of protecting his Salvadorean girlfriend and getting her out of the country. Written by Tony Bowden <t.bowden@qub.ac.uk>

Trivia

The title 'Salvador' has a double meaning. It refers to the country of El Salvador where the film is set but is also Spanish for 'saviour'. See more »

Goofs

In the beginning of the movie, the main character (Woods) complains to his friend (Belushi) that San Francisco has become a "yuppie" town. The word "yuppie" is used frequently. However, the movie is set in 1980-81, and the term "yuppie" didn't become popular until 1983-84. An early, obscure use of the word from 1980 exists, but a syndicated 1983 magazine article is commonly viewed as the introduction of the term. See more »

Now watch the doc on the DVD!
6 April 2007 | by See all my reviews

This movie was overshadowed by Platoon. The connection being that both are from the genius Oliver Stone! And both being released in 1986! Salvador at least as engaging as Platoon, but looking and feeling a lot more raw.

You get the feeling it's a documentary. The camera is in your face! Which is exactly what Oliver Stone wanted you to feel! And who better to represent the audience than a journalist (James Woods)?

Although if you watch the document about making this movie, which is as exciting as the future film itself, you'll appreciate the film a lot more! You will love it a lot more! Watch the movie for it's gritty content and for the fact it's a no holds barred look at a war zone and the depiction of that situation through media and politics!
