2010 in Review: Phil’s Top 10 Dtv Movies

29 December 2010 7:37 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Well 2010 is almost over and it’s time for my obligatory Top Ten of the year. As with last year I’ll be compiling two movie Top 10’s – one cinematic releases and one direct to DVD list. Why? Well the majority of movie sites and blogs give credence to all the big releases of the year but, as I try to do all year, I want to highlight some films which you might have missed that you really should hunt down and watch.

This list is completely subjective, and you may not agree with any or all of my choices or the order in which they appear. Either way I’d love to read your thoughts on my choices good or bad, so don’t forget to leave a comment. Anyway, onto the list:

10) Hunt to Kill

Jim Rhodes (“Stone ColdSteve Austin) is one bad ass Border Patrol Agent. »

[DVD Review] Planes, Trains and Automobiles: “Those Aren’t Pillows!” Edition

18 December 2010 7:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

The late John Hughes was known almost exclusively in the 80s for his teen films, however there is one movie of his that concerns adults, a hilarious road-trip comedy entitled Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The film pairs funny men Steve Martin and the late John Candy in what is easily one of the best comedies of the 1980s, and now the movie is presented on a new special edition DVD, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: “Those Aren’t Pillows!” Edition.

Steve Martin plays Neal Page, an uptight marketing executive on a business trip in New York trying to make it home to his family in Chicago in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Along the way, he crosses paths with Del Griffith, a talkative, well-meaning though somewhat obnoxious shower curtain ring salesman, played wonderfully by John Candy. They first encounter one another in New York when Neal struggles to find a cab. Del »

Waiting For Forever Trailer: Tom Sturridge Woos Rachel Bilson

17 December 2010 10:16 AM, PST | BuzzSugar | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Is Tom Sturridge following in the footsteps of his bud Robert Pattinson as a romantic leading man? We just saw Pattinson in the trailer for Water For Elephants, but now Sturridge steps up his game in this preview for Waiting For Forever. Sturridge stars as Will, a dreamer type who's still pining after the neighborhood girl from his childhood (Rachel Bilson). When they see each other years later, his feelings are still alive and well, but hers - not so much. In fact, she's engaged to another guy (Matt Davis of The Vampire Diaries!). The cast of this is actually pretty good (Blythe Danner and Richard Jenkins have supporting roles), but I can't get beyond Will's hat-and-earring combo and what appear to be pajamas. Is it just me, or does he have a whole Pretty in Pink Duckie vibe going on? Also, his advances come across as a little creepy. »

Glee’s Chris Colfer Writing And Starring In His Own Movie

8 December 2010 6:18 AM, PST | VH1.com | See recent VH1.com news »

Get ready to gleek out something fierce. Chris Colfer, better known as Kurt on Glee, is set to star in a film he wrote himself. According to Variety, Colfer plans to shoot Struck By Lightning during Glee’s hiatus next summer, with David Permut (Youth In Revolt) handling the directorial duties. Not bad for a 20-year-old! While a studio has yet to sign up to produce, it’s hard to believe someone won’t snap this up fast. “I was very impressed with how sophisticated Colfer’s writing is,” said Permut, comparing the script to a John Hughes movie. “He may be only 20 but he’s an old soul.” Speaking of “old soul,” we’re guessing Ducky will actually get to sing an Otis Redding song in this Pretty In Pink rather than lip sync. Nicki Minaj’s Top 20 Most Bootylicious Pics

2 December 2010 4:00 AM, PST | VH1.com | See recent VH1.com news »

VH1 Divas performer Nicki Minaj is nothing if not larger than life. She has a highly theatrical rap style, dons Gaga-esque outfits, has big beefs (we’re waiting for a response to Lil Kim’s diss track) — and, yes, an ass that only Coco could match. Nicki’s ultra-ample booty, which even gramps Regis Philbin can’t resist grapping, has been the source of constant Internet chatter for more than a year. Some say it’s all natural and others claim her proportions aren’t physically possible. Nicki addressed rumors that the junk in her trunk contains pads earlier this year. “Absolutely not,” she told the New York Post. “People will pick anything to talk about, and that happens to be the thing at the moment. I love being a conversation piece.” But she hasn’t addressed injection rumors. Regardless, we’re pretty sure she has the right ASSets (sorry, »

Lindsay Lohan Dropped from Porn Star Movie

21 November 2010 8:33 AM, PST | Extra | See recent Extra news »

Actress Lindsay Lohan won't be starring as porn star Linda Lovelace in "Inferno" after all.

The troubled starlet was to make her comeback playing the famous porn star in "Inferno," but director Matthew Wilder told E! Online he could no longer wait for Lohan as she continues her treatment at the Betty Ford clinic.

"We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan," Wilder said. "We are currently in negotiations [with another actress] and working out the legalities of bringing her onboard. »

Disney’s ‘Prom’ Trailer Wants to Take You to the Dance

18 November 2010 2:12 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Disney

The mere word “prom” can either send people into convulsions of terror or starry-eyed excitement. It’s either a magical memory or one that’s stomach twisting and awful.

Disney’s latest high school romp, “Prom,” promises to play on all those emotions and memories. The trailer debuted on MySpace, and no matter what your prom experience is (or was), it’s pretty magical stuff.

Prom” follows a group of high schoolers as their stories intersect on the way to the big dance.  They’re a fairly standard group of kids that includes the blonde overachiever (Aimee Teegarden, “Friday Night Lights”), the girl with inner drama (Yin Chang, “Gossip Girl”), the geek, Lloyd (Nicholas Braun, “10 Things I Hate About You”) and the bad boy (newcomer Thomas McDonnell).

The trailer takes them all through a string of love, heartbreak, excitement, secrets, disdain, dress shopping and tragedy. It taps into a major John Hughes spirit though, »

EW's Reunions issue: Which TV cast is on your wish list?

22 October 2010 7:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

If you’ve picked up the Reunions issue of Entertainment Weekly, you know that in honor of the magazine’s 20th anniversary, we’ve reunited cast members from TV classics including The West Wing, Will & Grace, Alias, Gilmore Girls, Married… With Children, Northern Exposure, Roots, and The Muppet Show. (See the links below.) If you could reunite a cast for a sitdown chat — whether it be two people or a group comparable to President Bartlet’s — who would you choose, and what would you ask?

Tops on my list: Sports Night. I’d like to know where those characters are »

EW Reunions: Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel address those pesky 'Gilmore Girls' movie rumors

21 October 2010 6:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Yes, Gilmore Girls fans, Lauren Graham really does talk that fast. As anyone who’s even caught a single episode of the seven-season The WB/CW dramedy can tell you, Graham and co-star Alexis Bledel had to deliver some seriously rapid-fire dialogue as mother and daughter Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Turns out, Graham is a bit of a fast-talker in real life, too. That could’ve just been nerves, of course: EW’s shoot was last February, before Graham’s new NBC series Parenthood had premiered, and the actress clearly had the show’s debut on her mind. Or Graham »

EW Reunions: 'The West Wing' cast talk President Obama, and where their characters are now

16 October 2010 9:01 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The cast of The West Wing must really enjoy each other’s company. Our reunion shoot for the Emmy-laden NBC drama was scheduled for a Sunday morning — early Sunday morning, at a dive bar in East Los Angeles, on one of the hottest days of the waning summer. Some of the women were scheduled to arrive at 7 a.m. Again: On a Sunday.

But Martin Sheen (President Josiah Bartlet), Allison Janney (C.J. Cregg), Bradley Whitford (Josh Lyman), Elisabeth Moss (Zoey Bartlet), Dulé Hill (Charlie Young), Janel Moloney (Donna Moss), Kathryn Joosten (Dolores Landingham), and Stockard Channing (Abigail Bartlet) could »

Weekend Meme: Nick Adams Is "Fab," David Geffen Does Politics, and Sam Witwer Talks "Being Human"

16 October 2010 6:50 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Everyone’s favorite mom, Barbara Billingsley, has passed away at 94. On Leave It To Beaver she made pancakes and vacuumed in pearls, with never a hair out of place. Then in Airplane! she spoke jive.  Mostly, in my mind, she was the woman who spurned the advances of Eddie Haskell.

Generating all sorts of chatter on the Internet today is an unsigned letter from someone who is sick of the proliferation of letters from Gl to Glb to Glbt to Glbtqiaop. Fortunately, I don’t have to pick this apart, because Alex Blaze did it for me at The Bilerico Project. Side note: Gay.com still exists?

Ever wonder what I do when I’m not writing for AfterElton.com? Probably not, but I did go to Bridge Day today, and that’s always fun.

I’m running out of ways to write “the Catholic Church has said something offensive. »

Go ‘Back to the Future’ while ‘Pretty in Pink’

15 October 2010 11:20 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Ok, I think I may have died and gone to heaven. Either that or someone has sacrificed a child to the god of the 80’s, as Entertainment Weekly have reunited not only the cast of Back to the Future but also the classic John Hughes flick Pretty in Pink for their latest issue.

I thought seeing the return of Back to the Future to the cinema was epic, but seeing some of my favourite actors and actresses of all time reunited and talking freely about their experiences on their respective movies? Now that’s made my year!

EW Reunions: The 'Pretty in Pink' cast agrees that Duckie would have come out by now

15 October 2010 9:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Andie might have reconciled with Blane at the prom, but we die-hard Pretty in Pink fans know that union wasn’t built to last. Sometime after graduation, Molly Ringwald’s Andie would have packed her bags for F.I.T. with her best bud Duckie (Jon Cryer) and left that “major appliance” Blane (Andrew McCarthy) in the uptight-richie dust. Or, as Cryer told us at EW’s Pretty in Pink reunion photo shoot recently, “Molly had a very good theory about that. She said, ‘Andie and Blane probably did not end up together, but Duckie and Andie ended up friends for life. »

'Back to the Future', 'Lord of the Rings' & 'Pretty in Pink' Cast Reunions (Video)

Pop culture science: after you see a movie you absolutely love, a memory is formed and it lurks under the surface for years and years, shifting and changing, morphing and growing, until one day -- it could be a year, or a few decades -- something comes along that drills straight into your gray matter and releases that memory in a geyser. That right there is nostalgia.

There is nothing more likely to trigger a memory geyser of nostalgia than seeing an iconic cast reunited. Who doesn't love that? The answer is no one. Entertainment Weekly was probably counting on that fact when they organized a series of reunion photo shoots for their latest issue. Thankfully, a video camera and someone with a notepad full of questions was apparently lurking nearby on every shoot, ready to satisfy your nostalgic cravings.

EW Reunions: Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Elijah Wood reminisce about 'Lord of the Rings'

Since hobbits routinely live for more than a century, 11 years is practically nothing, right? Four years after Jennifer Garner kicked her last enemy-of-the-state ass as Sydney Bristow on Alias, the actress and Victor Garber (who played her elusive father on the ABC series) got together for EW’s Reunions issue. In a New York City hotel room on a misty end-of-summer day, the duo posed for pictures with the kind of ease that only the closest friends share. Which is exactly what the former co-stars are.
