Freelance reporter's pal is murdered in a drug-related case
2 April 2017 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Mord i mørket" (1986) is a neo-noir listed by critic John Grant. It's not, not bad at all. I liked it. The IMDb rating is on target (5.9) suggesting an average crime picture.

It's a little varied in atmosphere. Although filmed realistically in urban settings, it comes across a fair amount of the time like a TV-movie in its mood of humor mixed with seriousness mixed with a sort of homey depiction of the protagonist, a freelance reporter, and his friends in their milieu, like a Turkish cab driver, a cook with a junkie wife, an elderly antiquarian bookstore owner and a trans guy or cross-dresser. The cinematography at times is noir but not much. The film doesn't go out of its way to enhance the mood with color. Films in the 80s didn't do that; that came in far more in the 90s. The hero (Michael Falch) grew on me as I watched. He's wiry and more athletic than he looks. Scenes where he runs are effective. He looks the part of a weary denizen of a sleazy district. He plays some jazz sax to boot with his pal, Ole, who gets killed. The story is pretty good, even if it has familiar elements. I got a kick out of the putdowns of the Danish police; that was part of the film's humor. A mood of pleasant seriousness, contradictory as they may seem, describes the main mood. Falch gets beat up pretty bad, but seems to take it well and be able to recover and dish it out himself. He's not given witty dialog or wisecracks. Although the surroundings include some sex clubs, there's no nudity or sex in the film. Our hero has no girl friend. He's too busy running from the police when it appears that he may have killed Ole.

No masterpiece, no bomb, quite average and yet it's a user-friendly film.
