No Stranger Than Love Review

17 June 2016 4:24 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Early on in No Stranger Than Love, something immediately seems off about the town inhabited by small-town schoolteacher Lucy Sherrington (Alison Brie). In a dynamic reminiscent of There’s Something About Mary, everyone in town seems to be in love with girl-next-door Lucy, and director Nick Wernham’s film — which marks his directorial feature debut — clearly establishes a whimsical, offbeat tone right from the start.

As it turns out, the squeaky-clean Lucy is on the verge of having an affair with fellow teacher (and married man) Clint Coburn (Colin Hanks). However, that rendezvous is cut short when a bottomless hole suddenly appears in Lucy’s living room, trapping Clint deep within the abyss. Making matters worse, a mysterious stranger (Justin Chatwin) arrives in town soon thereafter on a potentially dangerous mission to find Clint. Hilarity ensues, as Lucy must find a way to rescue Clint and keep both their reputations intact. »

Film Nerd 2.0: When kids ask hard questions about history, does Hollywood help or hurt?

26 April 2016 1:45 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

“I want to be in the Army.” That statement prompted a frantic phone call from my ex-wife, and an entire series of conversations. It also inspired a very particular screening of a very particular film, one in a series of recent screenings that have spoken to Toshi’s developing interests in both history and Hollywood. While movies are very important to Toshi, they are less important than Allen, and I suspect there will come a time where I lose Allen to other interests. That’s fine with me. Whatever he’s interested in and excited by, I’ll encourage him. Right now, his interests are more in games and puzzles and building things. Minecraft is pretty much the perfect intersection of all of Allen’s energies. As a result, when I am picking things that we’re all going to watch together, I find myself going mainstream and populist and easy. »

April Fool’S Day at 30: Director Fred Walton on His Horror Comedy Cult Classic

28 March 2016 5:22 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Today, the cult horror comedy April Fool’s Day celebrates its 30th anniversary. Written by Danilo Bach (Beverly Hills Cop) and directed by Fred Walton (1979’s When A Stranger Calls), the film follows a group of college students who spend spring break at their friend Muffy St. John’s family estate, unaware that the weekend will be filled with frights and unexpected surprises.

Released the same weekend as The Money Pit, April Fool’s Day became a modest success for Paramount Pictures, taking in $13 million during its three-week theatrical run and finding even more of an audience once it was released on VHS. Even though it has largely flown under the radar over the last 30 years, Walton’s slasher send-up with an Agatha Christie flair has remained a beloved cult film among genre fans and this writer in particular.

Looking back at the horror comedy, Walton discussed how his involvement »
