Janbaaz was a title Feroz Khan got from Salim Khan. When the Salim-Javed team broke up, it was Feroz Khan who contacted Salim, took him for a month to London and then to his farm in Bangalore. Salim wrote a script titled Janbaaz for FK which was to be made in English and Hindi. Feroz Khan was previously making a film titled "Kasak" The film starred Feroz Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha,Rekha, Praveen Babi. The film was shot for 3 months when Praveen Babi left the country and disappeared. Feroz decided to shelve the film. He took same star cast and decided to start "Jaanbaz". The only exception was Praveen Babi was not in the film. Feroz was on the look out for second heroine in the film. Feroz Khan shot the song "Pyar Do Pyar Lo " with Rekha and several international dancers. After shooting Jaanbaz for a few months, Feroz Khan realized the film's budget was going to be massive. Feroz realized that it would be impossible to recover the amount invested. With the industry going thru a bad phase due to the emergence of home video, Feroz decided to shelve the film. He retained the song Pyar Do Pyar Lo and decided to use it in his new film Feroz put the old Janbaaz on the back burner and decided to made the Anil Kapoor-Dimple starer Janbaaz instead. This film was a remake of Duel In The Sun. He earlier offered the film to Kamal Hasaan , but he declined due to a injury. Feroz wanted to make the film with just Anil Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia . But the distributors told Feroz that if he acted in the film it would fetch a better price . Thats when Feroz started the new Janbaaz. The script was different but he retained the title. Salim was also not happy with the earlier script he wrote due to the bold and sexual content.

Feroz Khan was told by distributors to cast Sri Devi in the film. He was reluctant as he was not impressed by her in Himmatwala. Giving in to distributors advice, he decided to call Sri Devi. Feroz Khan had offered the film to Sri Devi, but she refused. She was not excited to play a guest appearance, plus the role was very sensuous and very different from her screen image. It was when Feroz Khan spoke in Sri Devi' s mother tongue language of Tamil that she finally agreed. Feroz's command over the Tamil language surprised Sri Devi. This gestured touched Sri Devi and she signed the film. Feroz first met Sri Devi in Banglore on the sets of Janbaaz. He went on to sign Sridevi for Kasak in 1986. Feroz had prior tried to make the film in 1977 with Zeenat Aman, then in 1983 with Rekha and Praveen Babi. He finally tried once again with Sri Devi. The other film he signed Sri Devi for was Yalgaar. The film was shelved after the announcement. That film starred Feroz Khan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff. Feroz ended up shelving it when Anil walked out after Feroz Khan dropped Jackie Shroff. Anil wanted Jackie and only Jackie to be in the film. He later started Yalgaar with a different star cast and script.

Barson Purana" from Hera Pheri sounds a lot like "Jaane Jaana" from Jaanbaaz . Specially pay attention to the lines ".....jaise meraa rab rootha" from Barson Purana and compare to "....kya too meraa laage" from Jaane Jaana.
