Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • All though there is no gore or gruesome violence it can still be intense for younger viewers.
  • David is in his teacher's office walking up behind her as she has her back turned towards him. When he gets closer to the teacher she turns around with half a frog in her mouth, David watches in horror as she finishes eating the frog. Then the teacher tells David he's not suppose to be in here.
  • Some mild chase scenes between David and some adult authority figures.
  • Near the end of the movie we see 2 men disintegrated by one of the aliens weapons. Again there is no gore but can be intense for younger viewers.
  • Aliens tie down people to a table as a brain-like alien creature emerges and uses a long needle: he penetrates into the back of their necks to implant a device to control them.
  • Later as David escapes the ship a woman is pushed towards one of the aliens and is eaten alive by the alien. Again nothing graphic and it's done in a tongue n' cheek way. However, it can be intense for younger viewers.
  • Two men who have been controlled by the aliens have seizures on the ground and die.
  • All the violence is done very tongue in cheek style. But for younger viewers it can be intense.

Profanity

  • Mild language. Has a 2 or 3 holy Sh!t, David's dad affectionately calls David a wise ass, a couple uses of the word damn

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A military general is seen with a large cigar in every scene he's in.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The entire film recalls the feeling of a child's nightmare. The young protagonist is pursued relentlessly by once trusted adults being controlled by scary alien monsters. Paranoid and surreal atmosphere throughout. This film can be VERY SCARY for younger viewers.
  • Check the Violence & Gore section.
  • A kid's parents, teacher, classmates, and even local authorities are all being controlled by aliens and are all trying to find him and kill him. This idea is quite chilling.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The Invaders (as designed by Stan Winston of "Jurassic Park") are grotesque monsters with enormous heads and gigantic, flapping jaws filled with sharp teeth. Their leader is a slimy, brain-like creature that can mimic human speech. They are scary and surreal looking and will most likely frighten young children.
  • David's parents are both implanted with a Martian device and taken control of by the Invaders. They act in strange and intimidating ways toward their own child and repeatedly attempt to imperil his life. May be upsetting for sensitive viewers.
  • The protagonists watch as two government officials investigate a sandy basin behind a hill where the Invaders have hidden their ship. A vortex opens up beneath the officials and sucks them screaming into the ground. Surprising and frightening.
