Game of Thrones Round Table: "Blackwater"

31 May 2012 10:09 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Game of Thrones delivered its best episode of Season 2 last Sunday, as the battle of Blackwater left many dead and raised many questions heading into the upcoming season finale.

Here, as always, to break down the latest events and look to the future of this HBO epic are TV Fanatic Round Table panelists Matt Richenthal, Dan Forcella, Carissa Pavlica and Carla Day. Gather around for their Q&A below...

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene from the episode?

Matt: Tyrion and Shae in bed. As I mentioned in my review, the scene was symbolic of just haw far Tyrion has come. When he met Sansa, he was just looking for a hot piece before possibly going off to die in battle. Here, he was fully in love with that hot piece... before possibly going off to die in battle.

Dan: Because I had absolutely no idea how the battle was going to begin, »

Cannes 2012 roundup: Michael Haneke's Amour conquers all

26 May 2012 4:12 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

From the bonkers Holy Motors to the disappointing On the Road, Cannes offered plenty of breadth, but only Michael Haneke's exquisite tale of an elderly man caring for his frail wife in their Paris apartment ticked all the boxes

Michael Haneke is too good. Whenever the Austrian director shows one of his films in Cannes, I always come out thinking the others might as well just pack up and go home because they'll never reach his awesome heights of control and precision. It's like the days when Beethoven was around and everyone else gave up composing. Haneke's Amour, about an elderly man looking after his frail wife (Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, both utterly captivating) when a stroke confines her to their Paris apartment, was by some stretch the finest film at Cannes. It was the only piece to be exquisitely acted, composed, paced and pitched, as well as »

Supporting Actors: The Overlooked and Underrated (part 3 of 5)

24 May 2012 8:28 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Nicol Williamson as Merlin in Excalibur (John Boorman, 1981, UK):

Turning in by far the best acting in Boorman’s epic, Williamson sets the bar for all other interpretations of the Merlin character. Best known as an acclaimed stage actor with a history of incredibly unprofessional behavior, this is Williamson’s most memorable film role and will have you chanting the “charm of making” in no time.

Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty in Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982, USA):

As an android seeking to prolong his short life, Hauer’s unique screen presence is perfectly utilized in director Scott’s atmospheric science fiction milestone. Hauer brings a sort of “alien” quality to the character Roy Batty and really makes this role a truly superior piece of casting.

Other notable Rutger Hauer performances: Nighthawks (Bruce Malmuth, 1981, USA), The Hitcher (Robert Harmon, 1986, USA).

Ricardo Montalban as Khan in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (Nicholas Meyer, »

What's on your (cinematic) mind?

16 May 2012 1:56 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I was just thinking about Emma Stone because I spotted this great spoof sketch by Grant Gould of the Easy A poster through the Game of Thrones lens...

So fun! Which is coincidentally a word that doesn't fit Game of Thrones at all. It's too sober for fun. (Daenerys is just about my least favorite character in the Game of Thrones franchise because her story just never goes anywhere... Whatever, this post wasn't meant to be about GoT which I stopped watching a couple episodes ago, remembering how pissed the third book made me so why stick with it?)

So..... what were you just thinking about movie-wise before you clicking over to the Film Experience?

P.S. More posts coming to wrap up our Smash coverage, Cannes new, "Best Shot" and more. The past two days have been a little trying. »

Hit Me With Your Best Shot: "Bonnie & Clyde"

28 March 2012 9:31 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

This week's episode of 'Best Shot' features one of my all time favorite films Bonnie & Clyde (1967). Even if you just want to look at one scene and stop you're pulled in, right into the cramped cars and you're along for the whole ride. It never stops until it's so bullet-riddled it can't get back up again. Few films have ever felt as alive as this classic. The most impressive thing about Bonnie & Clyde nearly a half century later is that it still feels electric. Is it the way it fuses 30s and 60s and in so doing transcends anything to do with "dates" of production? Is it how completely adult it is in tone despite the youthful abandon?

Bonnie (Faye Dunaway) meets Clyde (Warren Beatty) in the first scene and by the eight minute mark she's lept in his car for good. Because the movie moves so quickly we're doing the same. »

TV Review: The Walking Dead —"Beside the Dying Fire"

18 March 2012 8:04 PM, PDT | The Movie Pool | See recent The Movie Pool news »

The farm—and the group's sense of security—burns in ashes in The Walking Dead's momentous season finale.

Now This is how you do it, Walking Dead.  For more than half a season, Twd has been going nowhere with plotlines that were A) Annoying or B) Inessential.  And I'll admit; I've been very critical of this show in the past.  But you know what?  I'm not asking for a lot with Twd; I don't need a new Breaking Bad, or even a new Lost.  I just want a fun, badass zombie show.  Basically, I wish The Walking Dead was Always like "Beside the Dying Fire."

From the opening scene on, "Beside the Dying Fire" is action packed and zombie crazy.  It's kind of strange to think how little zombies are featured in The Walking Dead, considering the kind of show it is.  In fact, we're lucky to see more than one. »

2012 Oscar Predictions Best Actor: Michael Fassbender, Demián Bichir

23 January 2012 7:44 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Demián Bichir, A Better Life 2012 Oscar Predictions Best Actor: George Clooney, Jean Dujardin, Brad Pitt The fourth Best Actor slot should go to Michael Fassbender, who is a strong possibility for Steve McQueen's Shame. Having said that, we should add that Fassbender, though a BAFTA nominee, was bypassed by SAG voters, and rumor has it that numerous Academy members hated Shame. Yet, all Fassbender needs is to get about 20% first/second place votes to land a nomination. That shouldn't be too hard, considering that the Best Actor competition this year isn't all that stiff. Also, Academy members who enjoyed watching Fassbender in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method, or Cary Fukunaga's Jane Eyre may choose to vote for him in Shame, as — barring an upset of Dennis Hopper-ish proportions† — that's Fassbender's only viable Oscar ticket. But what about the Nc-17 "stigma »

‘Boiler Room’ Director Ben Younger Returns for Boxing Biopic ‘Paz’

19 January 2012 4:48 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The first half of the 2000s looked like an ever-busy launching pad for writer-director Ben Younger. In addition to Boiler Room and Prime, the Brooklyn-born filmmaker also helmed a handful of short films. Virtually nothing industry-related, however, has been heard from him since the mid-2000s. Hopefully that will change for the better, as he’s signed on to direct Paz, an indie boxing biopic of “The Pazmanian Devil” Vinny Pazienza. [Variety]

The remarkable true story of Paz revolves around the boxer’s critical car-accident injury, which doctors diagnosed, at the time, as a wound of the career-ending variety. The original screenplay was done by Angelo Pizzo (Hoosiers, Rudy), another guy, like Younger, who’s been on an extended creative hiatus. Word is that Younger will polish the screenplay before shooting, which is scheduled to begin in September. Chad A. Verdi and Noah Kraft, meanwhile, are singed on as producers.

Ben Younger Punches In For Paz

19 January 2012 12:29 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Boxing biopics usually fall into one of two categories: the young upstart pup who shows the old dogs how it’s done (but struggles along the way), and the guy everyone has counted out (even the ref) who somehow makes his way back. Boiler Room director Ben Younger has just signed on to make one from the second group, called Paz.The film will follow the true-life tale of Vinny Pazienza, a pugilist in his prime who broke his neck in a car accident and was told he’d never walk again. But he refused to give in to that prognosis, and ended up winning three more world titles despite his injury. Now that’s guts.Producer Chad A Verdi – who according to Variety has known Paz since childhood – has been trying to push the film through development for several years now. He locked in sports biopic veteran and Hoosiers »

Gene Hackman recovering after being hit by a car

13 January 2012 3:07 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Actor Gene Hackman is apparently on the mend after after being hit by a car while on a bike ride in Key West. TMZ states that Hackman, 81, had been airlifted to a trauma hospital with injuries to his head and body.

The Oscar-winner's spokesperson tells the site that Hackman's already been released from the hospital and he's doing "fine." The rep says Hackman "suffered bumps and bruises after a woman bumped him from behind in her vehicle."

The injury occurred mid-afternoon on Friday (Jan. 13). The site reports that the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.

Over the course of his 50-year career, Hackman has played some of the most memorable roles in cinematic history. Some his most famous characters include Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in "The French Connection," Norman Dale in "Hoosiers" and Agent Rupert Anderson in "Mississippi Burning."

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

The shortlist for Britain's National Television Awards is out, and it will pit Downton Abbey against Doctor Who for the top prize, though Downton inexplicably received no nominations for the cast. They face off against Merlin and Waterloo Road.  Interestingly, John Barrowman and Eve Myles both got nominations for what to me at least was a very forgettable Torchwood.
