30 years on, Flash Gordon is still awesome

5 December 2010 10:31 PM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

On December 5, 1980, a motion picture arrived in theaters that redefined nothing.

Its makers had been hoping that the movie would be a titanic success, in the same leagues as Star Wars. It was not.

Its cast, having signed on to star in two more sequels, were hoping that this picture would place their names on the A-list of Hollywood actors. It did not.

But in the years that followed, there is one thing that Flash Gordon became: a cult movie, one that I deeply enjoy even though I shouldn't. I can't help myself: Flash Gordon is great. It's a movie that shouldn't have been made the way that it was, and probably the kind of film that couldn't get made today even if it were planned out.

To realize how a goofy but perfect Flash Gordon got made, you have to appreciate the era in a show business context. It was the late 1970s. »

So goes the premise for Aim High, a web series from executive producer Peter Murrietta, producer McG, creators Heath Corson and Richie Keen, and financiers Warner Premiere and Dolphin Entertainment. The program - which is one of three upcoming online originals from Warner Bros. short-form digital content arm - just announced its cast list will feature a number of actors popular with the teenybopper crowd. The top 100 things I love about TV

22 November 2010 9:40 AM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

“You don’t like anything.”

I get told I’m negative... a lot... pretty much perpetually. It’s been like this damn near my whole life. I don’t think people understand how that affects me. I’m not some armchair despot of media literacy, spewing bile for no reason other than to do so. I’ve taken the time, and money has been spent to construct an education in stringing words together, a real degree-holding education from an accredited university with big brick buildings and dorms and a football team - the whole nine yards. What I have gone through to get this knowledge is ridiculous, convoluted and could definitely be considered “the hard way,” but it has left me with a much finer understanding of what we are fed and told to be entertained by.

When I have a negative opinion (which is admittedly frequent), it’s because »

MTV’s Teen Wolf Trailer

16 November 2010 7:14 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

When it was first announced that MTV was producing a TV series based on the classic '80s comedy Teen Wolf, I think most of us knew where it was heading. Nonetheless, seeing the movie get the full Twilight makeover in this first trailer is still a bit of a shock to the system if you grew up with the original film. Thanks to the hunky Taylor Lautner, werewolves are hot, sexy and cool... they are no longer socially awkward geeks who struggle to come to terms with adolescence. There is no trace of the geeky charm that Michael J. Fox brought to the role, instead we have Tyler Posey in the lead role with the same chiseled good looks as every other teen heartthrob nowadays. I just don't understand why they even bothered to name it Teen Wolf. The title seems too innocent and goofy for this show, and »

MTV greenlights new versions of “Teen Wolf,” “Skins”

MTV’s reinvention of the 1980s movie Teen Wolf is moving forward, says The Hollywood Reporter. The 1985 film starred Michael J. Fox as a teenager who discovers he is a werewolf. The MTV version will be set in high school, draw from the horror genre to explore werewolf mythology and include a romantic plot line.

MTV is also remaking another show that not that many people are familiar with. Skins is a British series that follows a group of teenagers who do bad things like drugs, have sex, do more drugs, and have more sex.

Here is the press release:

Filled with suspense, horror and the struggle to discover one’s true identity, MTV puts a modern spin on one of the most popular classic films of the eighties, MGM’s Teen Wolf. The reinvention comes alive as a sexy thriller set against the drama of high school life with a forbidden, »

DVD Playhouse—November 2010

By Allen Gardner

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Audio commentary by critic Gary Giddins; Excerpt from 1966 audio interview with Kubrick; 1979 interview with Douglas; New interviews with Jan Harlan, Christiane Kubrick, and producer James B. Harris; French television documentary on real-life case which inspired the film; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 1.0 mono.

Highlander Christopher Lambert Cast in Ghost Rider Sequel

14 October 2010 11:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

MTV today bring news that immortal swordsman Connor MacLeod himself, Christopher Lambert, has posted news on the official Highlander Facebook page that he’s been cast in Ghost Rider: Spirit with a Vengeance.

He’ll join Nicolas Cage who’s returns as Johnny Blaze and an impressive supporting cast including the likes of Ciaran Hinds (as the devil) and Idris Elba, who will play an alcoholic warrior monk (?)

Lambert’s career has been quiet of late, with him mostly cropping up in Dtv fare and in Richard Kelly’s weird post-apocalyptic folly Southland Tales, although he gained some good notices last year for his role in French filmmaker Claire Denis’ African plantation drama White Material.

It’s good to see him back in fantasy mode however, and this sequel to Ghost Rider (which is being directed by Crank’s Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor) is due to begin production next month in Romania. »

Will Audiences Take The Bait?

While they often make us a feel a little uneasy about going into the water, shark movies have always proven a hit with audiences. Fans of the genre may be excited to hear that shooting has just started on the Gold Coast for Bait 3D, a new shark action film shot in, uh, 3D.   The script was penned by Australian born Russell Mulcahy - director of 1986's Highlander, the Jesse Spencer/Geoffrey Rush starrer Swimming Upstream and more recently Resident Evil: Extinction - who was also originally meant to direct the film. However directorial duties were passed to Kimble Rendall, who finally follows up the Kylie Minogue and Molly Ringwald shocker, Cut (2000), in the meantime working as an assistant director on an impressive array of commercial hits including the recently shot actioner The Killer Elite, as well as Knowing and Matrix Reloaded. »
