We'll always remember John Hughes for films like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club, but it's his Planes, Trains and Automobiles that's probably his most human film, a hilariously touching account of two strangers whose Thanksgiving travel woes force them to work together to get from point A to point B in the most ridiculously awkward ways. Steve Martin and John Candy have tremendous chemistry in this film, which at its core is about connecting through missed connections. God I love it. Anyway, Gallery 1988 out of Los Angeles is doing a fun Steve Martin tribute show, which will include this ficitious (drats!) Plains, Trains and Automobiles toy set created by Mick Minogue. If this existed in real life, we'd be playing with it right now. [via...

Bunheads: Spoilers for the First Three Episodes
For months, the pilot of Bunheads has been hinted at, talked about, and cryptically previewed, both on ABC Family and the internet at large. That's to be expected, considering the caliber of talent in front of (Tony winner Sutton Foster) and behind (Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino) the camera, but what I've been most interested in are the episodes following the pilot. Once the premise has been clearly defined and Michelle makes the trek from Vegas to Paradise, California, what happens then? How will she adjust to being out of the limelight, marrying a stranger, and teaching dance instead of being on stage?
Listed below are the dates, initial airings, episode names, and episode descriptions for the first three episodes of Bunheads, all of which hint that her transition to small town life may not go as smoothly as she thought.

Who you gonna call? Help us find cinemas best spooks

More than any other medium, film has the power to scare us silly. In the dark of the cinema, the suspense of a slow pan, that shadowy figure at the edge of frame – the shock of a sudden sound-effect, or jittery jump-cut – all come together in delicious, breath-stopping, heartbeat-skipping moments of pure cinematic fear. But forget chainsaws, zombies or psychos. The best scares in cinema are the ghosts that don't rely on gore to frighten. Subtly terrifying, flesh-creepingly sinister or horribly uncanny, here's a roll-call of the most memorable, best-realised apparitions on film.

Movie night just got a major upgrade.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just announced their new film venue just in time for summer: an outdoor theater and bi-weekly film series titled, "Oscars Outdoors."
Screenings will take place on Friday and Saturday nights, June 15 through August 18. "Casablanca," "The Princess Bride," "North By Northwest," "Back To The Future," and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," are just some of the titles being projected on the permanent 40 by 20 foot screen.
"I wish we could have built a drive-in theater," said AMPAS President Tom Sherak to ABC. "This is the closest we could get."
Expansive grounds provide ample space for lounging and City Councilman Eric Garcetti has even agreed to look into street closures in order to provide a more enjoyable movie-going experience, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Guests will be able to purchase $5 tickets (not bad!) online starting June 1. Amaps members »

Would there be Broadway musicals without the Gershwins? Probably, but happily, that's a rhetorical question.
In the 2012 season, it is striking how much George and Ira still get around, and as Matthew Broderick and Kelli O'Hara sing in "Nice Work If You Can Get It," -- " 'S Wonderful." They sing many familiar Gershwin songs in this new musical, set during Prohibition.
Director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall ("Anything Goes") makes great use of the talent. O'Hara, a gem, earned another Tony nomination for her work as Billie, a tough bootlegger. There's a sweetness to her voice and presence, and she moves well as Billie, a tough bootlegger.
Broderick ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off") plays Jimmy Winter, a feckless, thrice married rich guy with a weakness for chorines and hooch. As lovely as O'Hara is, and as rich as the supporting characters are, Broderick is pleasant and very likeable. His voice is fine, »

Remember the '80s Swiss electronic duo Yello? Nope? Doesn't ring a bell? Okay, let's try this again: remember that awesome "chicka chicka... ohhhh yeahhh" song that plays at the end of Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Yes, of course you do; in fact, you're probably pissing off your loved ones by mimicking that epic, computerized baritone right now. First of all, stop doing that, because it's ridiculously annoying. Second of all, you're not the only one who remembers the song; apparently, Karl Rove remembers it too. His super Pac American Crossroads came under fire this week for featuring what sounds like a sample of the track in an anti-Obama attack ad. And Yello (the aforementioned Swiss electronic duo who authored the tune) is none too pleased about it. The commercial, titled "Cool," paints the president Obama as a bumbling, ineffectual [...] »

It's not easy to put together a top 100 of just about anything, but the folks over at Yahoo! Movies have really thrown down the gauntlet this time with a list of the 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die. In describing the list, they maintain that their goal was to choose the "funniest" movies out there, not necessarily the "best" comedies. With that in mind, you might think they'd stay away from critically acclaimed classics and lean more toward low brow, quick and easy laughfests. But you'd be wrong. There are a lot of classics on this list, everything from The Apartment to Dr. Strangelove to Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times and Buster Keaton's The General. There are also movies on here that aren't really "comedies" per se, such as Pulp Fiction and Martin Scorsese's After Hours. More than anything, this serves as a reminder that what is »

Whoa! Blossom and Joey Russo are back, but they're not hanging out with Six this time around. Mayim Bialik and Joey Lawrence, who played the beloved '90s characters on "Blossom," are appearing in an Old Navy ad to promote the company's spring line, "Old Navy Bee Bots."
In the commercial, Bialik pops up in one of her famous floral hats, while Joey appears as a "Bee Bot," and utters his catchphrase, "Whoa!"
"Blossom" aired on NBC from 1991-1995, with Bialik starring as the titular teenager living with her two brothers (Lawrence and Michael Stoyanov) and father (Ted Wass).
Though the show is long over, both Bialik and Lawrence have continued with their TV careers: Bialik is now a series regular on CBS hit "The Big Bang Theory" and Lawrence stars on ABC Family's "Melissa & Joey," opposite fellow famous '90s face Melissa Joan Hart.

Robert Pattinson should successfully shake the Twilight teen heartthrob stereotype when he next appears in Cosmopolis, the David Cronenberg film based on the novel by Don DeLillo.
The first Cosmopolis teaser trailer hit the Internet today and paints a dark and erotic journey for Pattinson's character. He plays a billionaire asset manager who heads out in a limo in Manhattan to get, of all things, a haircut. It should be a quick to and back trip, but turns out to be anything but.
Along the way, Pattinson's character runs into his wife, gets cast in a movie, caught up in a riot, and stalked by two mysterious men. There's also a presidential visit that will throw Manhattan's already rough traffic nightmare to navigate into overdrive.
The plot may feel a little bit like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but the tone of Cosmopolis is anything but. From the teaser trailer it's »

Where would we be without music in our favorite films? While some may rely mostly on score, the needle drop of a pop tune can be quite satisfying when paired with a memorable scene. There could be a few opportunities for this type of moment on the way thanks to some exciting music news that also concerns the film world.
While we’d still love to get our hands on the score by “Jeff Who Lives At Home” and “Cyrus” composer Michael Andrews, we’ll definitely settle for a new track from Beck from the former film. The Duplass’ latest film has helped give Beck fans a pretty stellar new track in “Looking For A Sign” that falls right between Mutations and Sea Change-era Beck, which is certainly a good thing. The mostly acoustic-driven track is also a step away from the work he did as Sex Bob-Omb on the »

Considering it's where most of us (bar the weird home-schooled kids) spend our crucial formative years, where we have our first fights, our first loves, our first tentative steps into adulthood, it's no surprise that high school has long been a popular setting for movies. A range of genres (though generally leaning towards comedy) have taken place in those hallways, particularly from the 1980s onwards, when John Hughes, among others, made an entire career out of the lives and loves of 15-18 year olds.
The latest film to head back to class is "21 Jump Street" (review here) the big-screen reboot of the '80s TV show, which stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as youthful-looking cops who are sent back to high school in order to bust a drug-running ring. While you might assume this to be another lazy remake, you'd be very wrong, as Tatum, Hill, co-writer Michael Bacall, »

Chicago property featured in 1990 comedy starring Macaulay Culkin sold for nearly $1m below asking price
The Chicago house featured in the 1990 comedy Home Alone has been sold for $1.58m (£1m).
With 14 rooms, three storeys and a location in Winnetka, a sought-after village 16 miles north of the Windy City and just minutes from Lake Michigan, the property's owners had hoped to sell it for $2.4m (£1.53m) when the house went on the market 10 months ago. However, they settled on Thursday for the substantially lower price. The buyer has not been identified.
The redbrick colonial-style building featured extensively in the blockbuster movie in which Macaulay Culkin's plucky eight-year-old fends off bungling burglars after being accidentally left behind when his family heads off on a Christmas holiday. The script was written by the late John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off), while Chris Columbus took the director's chair. Joe Pesci »

This week's Happy Endings left me with a major jonesing for a John Hughes movie marathon. "The Kerkovich Way" showcased Max and Penny participating in Chicago movie themed scavenger hunt, the very city where the famed director set many of his hit flicks.
Not only did the show name drop gems such as Risky Business, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club and my personal favorite Sixteen Candles, but we got an awesomely random cameo!
The parking attendant who so famously took Cameron's father's Ferrari for a joyride in Ferris Bueller dropped in on Max and Penny during the scavenger hunt. I love fun appearances like that.
Despite how depressed Max was about his breakup with Grant, he was a good sport and a great friend to Penny. I like how he perked up mid-scavenger hunt when he pulled a Risky Business and attempted to rescue the "crystal" egg.

This is certain to go viral as Evan Seitz has put together a 58-second short featuring the animated ABCs of Cinema with a separate animation and audio snippet for 26 different films to represent each letter of the alphabet. The snippets happen very quickly and while watching I'm not ashamed to say several stumped me, though I was particularly impressed with the film he started with as well as his choices for M, N, U, V, Y and Z. Three I wish I could change are for letters E as I believe he could have done the obvious E.T. reference or something cool with The Exorcist or Eyes Wide Shut. I totally expected one of the Harry Potter films for H and I wish he hadn't gone with an unreleased film in that place as maybe Halloween would have been a more interesting choice and Q is a tough one »
