Lost – The John Hughes Edition?

31 October 2009 6:05 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Is Lost planning an homage to John Hughes?  The ever vigilant Ryan from TheTransmission passed on some details regarding a day of shooting that, among other things, suggested: Mario Van Pebbles onset as a guest director or producer; fan favorites Locke and Ben possibly taking on the role of substitute teachers; second stringers Alex Rousseau and Leslie Arzt; and, Ryan has exclusively revealed to us the identity of a certain William Atherton's character.  Anyway you slice the scoops, one thing is clear:  this episode of Lost is high-school centric.

Atherton's appearance on Lost was first revealed through some teasing tweets from Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse, and we now know he will be playing the part of Principal Reynolds.   Tell me this guy wasn't born to play a bad ass principal.  Arzt, as you will recall, was a junior high science teacher so it appears we will see him back in his role, »

Broadway Bosses Defend Broderick Play Director

30 October 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Theatre bosses in charge of Matthew Broderick's new Broadway show have denied they are planning to fire the director after a shambolic preview performance.

The Ferris Bueller's Day Off star is playing the lead role in The Starry Messenger, about a middle-aged astronomer who falls in love with a younger woman.

But the actor stunned fans when the curtain went up on Monday for the show's first preview, when he repeatedly forgot his lines.

A source told the New York Daily News, "It was an overall mess. He kept apologising under his breath after he forgot a line and everyone in the audience began to feel awkward."

Broderick's poor memory prompted the show's producers to postpone the official opening of the play by a week, to 23 November - but according to the New York Post, it's not the actor who is at fault, it's his pal, The Starry Messenger's writer and director Kenneth Lonergan.

A Broadway insider says, "Matthew doesn't know what he's doing because Kenny doesn't know what he's doing. Kenny has lost his way."

The tabloid claims rehearsals for the production have been "adrift" and "unfocused" when they take place and Lonergan is frequently absent or late for the run-throughs.

However, Geoff Rich, executive director of The New Group, which is producing the play, insists there are no plans to oust Lonergan, despite admitting the production has experienced some difficulties.

He says, "There is no consideration of a new director taking over. Is there a little bit of chaos and confusion? Yes. But there has been on every production of every play that we have produced here."

These have not been first problems for The Starry Messenger - veteran actor Jonathan Hadary reportedly "left in disgust" when he walked out on the show in early October. Representatives for the play officially stated Hadary had to quit due to scheduling difficulties. »

Whip It – Movie Review

7 October 2009 11:01 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Perhaps tied a little too closely to the generic plot arc of a sports film, Whip It nevertheless delivers a fun time and a long overdue worthwhile return to generational exploration. It is unfortunately macabre now to say that there is no John Hughes working in Hollywood today, but there hasn't been since the mid-80's, and while Drew Barrymore is not remotely John Hughes, Whip It is at least a cleverly-expressed attempt. Had we someone at the helm who could really pull at the small nuances and milk every scene for all it's worth (in the good way), this one would in all likelihood have been able to rock you to the core and shoot to instant classic status. Remember the first time you say The Breakfast Club, or Ferris Bueller's Day Off? That kind of potential is in here. As it stands, we only have a really good effort, »

Ceaseless deaths of the famous mark summer `09

18 September 2009 5:57 PM, PDT | Filmicafe | See recent Filmicafe news »

We had been told to expect the deaths of the famous to come in threes, not in the dozens. But all through the summer of 2009 came a ceaseless and somber drumbeat, as idols of all walks of life passed away. From Walter Cronkite to Sen. Ted Kennedy, the nonstop loss of luminaries continued almost as if a seasonal occurrence . as much a part of summer as hot dogs and humidity. If a filmmaker were trying to capture the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson news would be playing in the background. Many thought coverage of Jackson's death was too much; a Pew Research Center poll released in July found that 64 percent of those surveyed thought the media blitz was overdone (though none could top MTV Japan, which designated an entire week of mourning for Jackson). But news outlets went heavy on coverage for the many others who passed. Collectively, it made the constant commemorating hard to escape, »

The Real Ferris Bueller

12 August 2009 4:27 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The death of 80's teen movie writer/director John Hughes has unearthed a bunch of new trivia on Hughes' filmography. For instance, did you know that the title character in Ferris Bueller's Day Off was actually based on Hughes' child hood friend? Edward McNally has written an essay for The Washington Post in remembrance of his friend, filmmaker, John Hughes. Here is an excerpt: "Movie director John Hughes and I grew up on the same street in our home town of Northbrook, Ill. We both graduated from Glenbrook North, the high school where he filmed scenes from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "The Breakfast Club," where his mom worked and two sets of our sisters were classmates. Because for years I was relentlessly pursued by a remarkably humorless Glenbrook dean about attendance, pranks and off-campus excursions -- and because my best friend was in fact named Buehler -- I've spent »

Molly Ringwald on the 'Neverland' of John Hughes

12 August 2009 12:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Molly Ringwald's tribute to John Hughes in the New York Times offers outsiders an enlightening look at what it was like to work with the writer and director who created the movies that not only shaped our teen years, but those of his stars. While her essay is sentimental, it's not saccharine, and like Ms. Ringwald herself, it's beautiful. She offers us a rare glimpse into the reclusive director, "a sort of J.D. Salinger for Generation X" whom she compares to Peter Pan with a huge, open heart that eventually closed off to the world of Hollywood.

She writes, "Most people who knew John knew that he was able to hold a grudge longer than anyone - his grudges were almost supernatural things, enduring for years, even decades. Michael suspects that he was never forgiven for turning down parts in Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I »

The Reelist: Life Moves Pretty Fast...

12 August 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

What will define the late John Hughes as a seminal screenwriter and filmmaker is his remarkable string of films that defined comedy for a generation. He cannily outlined teenagerhood for the 1980s generation by casting as his protagonists real, awkward-looking teenage actors (the type of casting that would turn into twentysomethings-playing-high schoolers by the time Beverly Hills 90210 came around). Hughes' work stands out because he stayed rooted in his native Chicago suburbs: He wrote what he knew. He covered family (Planes, Trains and Automobiles), childhood (Home Alone), and the teenage years (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off). The films centered around extremely relatable and realistic insecurities: from feeling ignored to feeling like a fake and far, far more. Bonus: They were funny! It was a magazine that led to 'John Hughes'; after Hollywood took notice of his National Lampoon piece Vacation '58, it led to »

Stein Honours Hughes At Funeral

12 August 2009 5:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Ben Stein paid an emotional farewell to his Ferris Bueller's Day Off director John Hughes at his "very touching" funeral on Tuesday.

Hughes passed away aged 59 after suffering a heart attack while out walking in Manhattan, New York last week - and a host of stars, including Stein, Matthew Broderick and Vince Vaughn, turned out for his private memorial in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Stein, who played a teacher in 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off, spoke at the moving service to pay tribute to his close friend.

The 64 year old called the ceremony "very touching" and admitted there was "a lot of crying" from the congregation.

He adds, "We'll never see his like again. He was the Wordsworth of the suburban America post-war generation. He was a great, great, great genius and as much of a friend and a great family man as he was a poet."

Following the service, mourners gathered in a procession to a Lake Forest cemetery, where Hughes was to be laid to rest. »

Alliance Films Doesn't Forget About John Hughes Doc

11 August 2009 10:59 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The Canadian makers of a documentary inspired by film director John Hughes must be having mixed feelings about his recent tragic death.

As big fans of Hughes' films from the 1980s (which included The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller's Day Off) Matt Austin, Kari Hollend, Mike Facciolo and Lenny Panzer would have been saddened by the recent news that the director had passed away from a heart attack at the age of only 59. According to Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper, however, something positive came out of the event for the four men. The resulting upwelling of interest in Hughes has led Alliance Films to sign a deal with them to distribute their independently-made documentary, Don't You Forget About Me. The film focuses on the director's portrayal of teenage life.

"It's a very uncomfortable feeling and you can't help but feel guilty," said Hollend, who is one of the film's producers. »

Details on the John Hughes Film Fest in Tempe, Az

11 August 2009 2:37 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We told you last Friday about an upcoming John Hughes Film Festival in Tempe, the university-friendly suburb of Phoenix. The Big Picture is proud to partner with Harkins Theaters for this exclusive chance to honor the memory of John Hughes through six of his classic films, which begins this Friday.

When we first broke the news, I thought it would be a couple days, maybe run the full weekend, but Harkins is so committed to the event that for a solid week, the Valley Art is showing nothing but John Hughes movies. Because of its rich history, the 69-year-old theater is one of my absolute favorites, and when it was remodeled a few years ago, they did a tremendous job giving it the modern creature comforts while keeping that link to its history. So it's a perfect place to see these movies.

The schedule is below, but the films you can see beginning this Friday, »

Forgetting About John Hughes?

How did the small screen remember John Hughes? Why is Tlc so defensive about Jon & Kate? And why should the Jonas Brothers stop following Miley Cyrus? Or start blaming Twilight? The answers—and more questions—in the latest TV quiz: 1. How many times did The Breakfast Club air over the weekend? Zero. While, yes, the iconic filmmaker did only die last Thursday, the new iCarly movie debuted only last Saturday, and wound up airing a bajillion times. Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller's Day Off received a little more love: Each was aired once on AMC, albeit before Hughes' death. 2. How can you tell Tlc is kinda touchy about Jon & Kate Plus 8? The network wrote a memo "for those of... »

Will You See Michael Jackson This Halloween?

The title of the Reuters story says it all and so much more: Coroner completes Jackson autopsy, film deal set. Columbia Pictures will be distributing This is It, which will be comprised of Jackson's preparation for the tour of the same name. Kenny Ortega, who directed High School Musical 3: Senior Year and has choreographed everything from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Dirty Dancing to To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, will direct. (Ortega worked on the concerts with Jackson.)

Since some of the scenes shot for the concert were in 3D, we can expect to see Jackson coming at us in all three dimensions in some theaters this October 30th. The footage itself is owned by concert promoters Aeg, who are desperately trying to take advantage of the mourning for Mj, so I would imagine that the company will be taking a cut of the profits. John Hughes Documentary Finds Distributor!

11 August 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

The fitting title of a new documentary about the late, great John Hughes is "Don't You Forget About Me." That title is, of course, an homage to the new wave group Simple Minds and their similarly titled song for "The Breakfast Club," one of Hughes' 80s classics.

This documentary did not have a future until the director's untimely death last week.

Now, Alliance Films has purchased world rights to the documentary.

The film delves deeper into Hughes' pop culture hits such as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "The Breakfast Club," and "Sixteen Candles."

But it is also an "in-search of" type of documentary with the filmmakers (headed by director Matt Austin-Sadowski) going to suburban Illinois to find the reclusive Hughes.

Why did Austin-Sadowski do the documentary? He tells Variety, "He inspired me as a person, going through an awkward adolescence, as many people do."

Low Budget Film About John Hughes Gets Distributor

A docu-film about the late director John Hughes will be released internationally. The low-budgeted "Don't You Forget About Me" has nabbed a distributorship shortly after the filmmaker's death last week.

Variety said that the film has been acquired by the Alliance Films of Montreal after Hughes' death Thursday.

The film, made without public funding, is a 75-minute road trip search for the reclusive filmmaker. Austin-Sadowski and producers Kari Hollend, Mike Facciolo and Lenny panzer drive to Illinois to try to find the mastermind behind teen cult classics such as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "The Breakfast Club," and "Pretty in Pink."

It includes interviews with Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Mia Sara, Kelly LeBrock, and Andrew McCarthy.

After tragedy, John Hughes documentary thrust into the spotlight

The Canadian documentary Don't You Forget About Me has found a distributor at the cost of the life of the movie's subject, John Hughes. This past Friday, the day after the acclaimed director/writer/producer passed away at the age of 59, the doc's director found the world calling.

Matt Austin-Sadowski's phone was ringing off the hook. Reporters wanted to talk to him and find out more about his film which chronicles him and three others taking a road trip to find Hughes in his self-imposed solitude living somewhere around Chicago. With the unexpected passing of the filmmaker, Austin-Sadowski's film and his story were in demand.

"He inspired me as a person, going through an awkward adolescence, as many people do," Austin-Sadowski told Variety when asked why he chose to make his film. "He took affairs of the heart very seriously, and no other director gave teenagers that sort of treatment at that time. »

Sound On Sight Radio #144 - Remembering John Hughes

11 August 2009 12:32 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

There are two things I remember best about early-to-mid-1980s movies: slasher films and teen comedies. While the slasher films bring back fond memories they never quite compare to the quality of the teen angst flicks which made for repeated viewings. Everything from Porky's to the top-notch entertainment of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the teen flicks of the 80's have never been matched to date. One of the most consistent writer/directors to contribute to the '80s teen fad was John Hughes who in one way or another, was responsible for the likes of Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science. Today on Sound On sight we remember the legend and reflect back on our childhood.
