A 707 aircraft jetliner on its way from Athens to Rome and then to New York City is hijacked by Lebanese terrorists. The terrorists demand that the pilot take them to Beirut. What the terrorists don't realize is that an elite team of commandoes led by Major McCoy (Norris) and by Colonel Alexander (Marvin) as been called into service to eliminate all terrorists on the jetliner and who's involved in the hijacking and try to retake the plane before the terrorists kill all the hostages. The fictional airline in this film is called ATW (an anagram of real-life TWA or Transworld Airlines). Early footage for this film (as seen in a "making-of" documentary) shown that originally, ATW meant American Transworld Airlines. This was changed to American Travelways Airlines in the final cut. Upon arriving in Algiers, Lee Marvin's character puts an American flag patch on the left shoulder, with the blue field to the rear. That patch would be worn on the right shoulder. The blue field is always towards the front. See more
