Now that the Americans are gone.....
ulicknormanowen23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The US armed forces stationed in France between 1952 and 1967 ....

So why not an affair between an American soldier and a French girl? Twenty years after ,their daughter, now about twenty, discovers the truth ;her mom is unmarried because her lover had to leave for Vietnam ; one of his friends from his army's days, Harper, who has been leaving in France since the fifties , tells them that he was killed in action .But Harper is a shady guy,who may have been involved in arms dealing. A policeman ,in love with the mother ,investigates .

In spite of an interesting subject , the movie is a spate of clichés: the mother/daughter generation gap, the cop at odds with his superior who wants to get rid of him by sending him to the lousiest town in the country (of course the bad lieutenant discovers the truth ,the whole truth ), the "accident" , and to crown it all ,the trip to the USA where the father is still leaving (in a wheelchair)!

The flashbacks are in black and white but fail totally to convince ; besides ,if Edward Meeks is credible as an American ,the same does not go for Italian Giuliano Gemma.

An extra-star for Guy Marchand and Jean Bouise as the cops who save something from the wreckage.
