Judd Nelson seeks the killer of his father, 11 July 2014
Author: msroz from United States

The current IMDb rating of 4.3 for "Blue City" is about right, which means it's a below-par movie, not a good movie. The best part of it is Paul Winfield, who is always good. Also bringing the movie to life is another veteran actor, Scott Wilson. He too always creates an interesting character. Among the three younger actors, the one who comes off best and most believable is David Caruso. After him comes Ally Sheedy. Bringing up the distant rear is Judd Nelson. This presents a problem because he's the lead actor and protagonist. While it is a bit difficult to separate Nelson's bad acting from the badly-written character he plays, this can be done by imagining someone else in the same part, like Steve McQueen. One will then realize that Nelson didn't make us buy into his character, even as written, and that's a mild criticism of how his screen presence actually comes across.

This brings us to the biggest defect in the movie, which is the script. The story isn't bad, as it's by a decent novelist, Ross Macdonald. But the script that brings this to the screen is way too adolescent and way too unrealistic. It simply cannot be taken seriously. The actions of the main characters are often ridiculous. They are not what real people might do in similar circumstances. The dialog is way below par. The movie is a caricature of a real detective story along the lines of the Macdonald plot.
