Motel owner Harvey Keitel overhears crimes being plotted
22 September 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Blindside (1987) is a neo-noir that's missing from John Grant's tome.

It's Canadian-made and located. One thug dreams of getting out of Canada and talks about it. A cop has a hat with a red band. Otherwise, you might have a hard time knowing the story's location, which is a cheap part of Toronto, a sleazy motel whose proprietor is Harvey Keitel, giving his best rendering of a Harry Caul character as he spies on his tenants and discovers crimes afoot. In this story, he gets quite involved. It's not in the same league as "The Conversation".

A detailed and decent review with spoilers can be found in the sole critic review referenced on IMDb.

In one detail of that review, I take exception. It's a thriller, but not an erotic thriller. Keitel has a stripper girl friend (Lolita Davidovich) who does her routine, but that's not what makes for an erotic thriller, and neither does a brief tryst that Keitel has with another woman. I quote wiki "An Erotic thriller is a film genre defined by its combination of a thriller film with scenes of softcore sex, and thematic elements of illicit romance and erotic fantasy." This is all absent from this film.

This film is probably still on Netflix where it resided some years back.

This film has a number of faults. The main thug is over-the-top. Keitel watches one videotape of his wife's suicide too many times. The subplot of him and Davidovich goes nowhere; it's disconnected from the main plot. The main plot has some unexplained features, some elliptical points. It's pretty confusing. On the other hand, Davidovich brings some life-loving spirit to the film that balances its otherwise bleak atmosphere. Keitel is quite impassive throughout, but he still gives a decent performance that carries the movie. There's a little diversion into criticism of using human beings in behavioral experiments. It's compelling.

If you like b-movies or b-movie neo-noirs, as I do, then you might like this.
